Poole Borough (1) 2, Westland Sports (0) 0. Dorset Premier League Tuesday 23rd April 2005 Borough Scorers: Jimmy
Edwards 41, Ben Truan 58. Borough moved back into second place in the league with only one game to go as teenage striker Ben Truan celebrated becoming the first player to sign a contract for the Hornets by scoring the decisive second goal to register Borough's third straight victory. Within a minute of the kick-off Matt Morris came close for Borough as his shot from the left was deflected wide for a corner but minutes later Morris did well at the other end, stretching to cut out a cross field pass which would have sent a visiting forward clear on goal. On 17 minutes Dan Herrington did well to ride two tackles as he carried the ball out of defence, before threading a pass into the path of David Perry but the Borough forward was denied by a well timed defensive tackle. As the half progressed Westlands began to carve out further chances on the break and Sean Hebdon did well under pressure to clear a cross drilled in from the right and the visitors worked the ball back to the edge of the area before the final shot was drilled over. On 28 minutes Gary Fooks battled to collect a short pass from Perry in the 6 yard box but saw his final shot deflected wide but at the other end Stuart Amey in the home goal was forced into a fine save from a low shot after Westlands had again broken through the home back line. Borough came close again on 38 minutes as Jimmy Edwards sent over an in swinging corner from the left which Gary Noone in the home goal did well to palm the away as it looked likely to curl inside the far post and Tony White returned the loose ball back into the danger zone where David Perry got his head to the cross but it went narrowly over. But Borough broke the deadlock three minutes later as Andy Barham found space wide on the left and got to the by-line before crossing to the far post and although Truan was unable to get in a clean header the ball fell into the path of Edwards steaming in from the right who angled a low drive into the bottom corner to register his first goal for Borough since his return to the club. Half Time 1-0 Westlands continued to pose a threat on the break and Morris again did well under pressure to clear a cross at the left hand post. However Borough doubled their lead on 58 minutes as Truan was sent through on goal and with Noone to beat he squared to Morris who drew the visiting keeper before centring back to Truan to slam the ball home. With Westlands committing themselves forward gaps began to appear at the back and Perry got clear of the visiting defence only see his attempt to lob Noone palmed away at full stretch by the gloveman. A minute later though Amey was again called into action as he denied a Westland striker with his legs before tipping the resulting corner over the bar. On 73 minutes Westlands had their best chance to pull a goal back as a sliced clearance from Sean Hebdon was picked up by a visiting forward just inside the area but Amey spread himself well to block the shot. Jamie Holland replaced Truan for the last 15 minutes and made an immediate impact, sending Fooks through but Noone was quickly out of his area to block. Westlands were reduced to 10 men on 81 minutes after a crude challenge on Holland was followed by an altercation which also saw Sports manager Peter Watts sent from the dugout. The final minutes saw Holland denied by Noone as he was sent clear and the home keeper again kept the score down deep in injury time, denying Perry after he had outpaced the visiting defence following a flick on from Holland. Borough: Stuart Amey, Matt Parkin, Tony White, Gary Fooks (Alex Gunn 90), Sean Hebdon, Dan Herrington, Jimmy Edwards, Ben Truan (Jamie Holland 77), David Perry, Andy Barham, Matt Morris. Unused subs.
