Dorchester United (0) 0, Poole Borough (0) 1. Dorset Premier League Saturday 10th September 2005 Borough Scorer: Anthony Warrington 74. Borough recorded their first 'double' of the season as they followed up the home win against United two weeks ago with narrow but hard-fought victory at Sandringham, courtesy of a goal on his debut from Anthony Warrington who signed from Hamworthy United the previous day. With Borough keeper Dan Burton unavailable, Doug Shear also made his first senior start for the Hornets and put in an assured performance to fully deserve his clean sheet. The game also marked a milestone for Dan Herrington, being his 150th competitive appearance for Borough. In the early stages neither side were able to fashion out a clear chance as both teams took time to adjust to the wet conditions. United finally put the Borough defence under pressure on 13 minutes with a cross from the left and Scott Orchard at the far post was forced to head the ball clear for a corner. Almost immediately though Warrington showed a good touch to send Lee James down the left and his final shot was deflected wide by a home defender. Borough however had a let off on 21 minutes when a United free kick into the area picked out a home striker unmarked by the left post, but his diving header went wide with the goal at his mercy. This acted as a wake-up call for Borough and they were themselves awarded a free-kick 20 yards out four minutes later which Warrington stepped up to curl towards the top corner, but Paul Gadsby got across superbly to punch the ball away. A minute later Andy Barham sent in a low corner from the left which Tony White got a foot to at the back stick but the ball flew narrowly wide. On 38 minutes Danny Herrington carved out an opening wide on the left before sending in a cross that alluded Gadsby before striking the far post. Three minutes before the break Barham and Scott Bedward combined well in the centre circle to create a chance for James whose final shot was off target. However in first half injury time Shear was called on to collect a low shot on the turn from outside the area. Half Time 0-0 Within three minutes of the restart Warrington carved out a chance with a break down the right and he lifted the ball over the advancing Gadsby but a home defender got across to clear the ball for a corner. However the Borough defence were not allowed much rest bite with Dorchester's long ball tactics keeping them under almost constant pressure and on 63 minutes a swift break saw the United forwards three against two, but the striker in possession elected to shoot from outside the area and Shear did well to divert the ball past the post. Two minutes later Orchard was forced to head a right wing cross over his own cross bar as the Borough defence were again stretched and later Shear made another good block to deny a shot from the left. But it was Borough who broke the deadlock on 74 minutes as Warrington again found space down the right before cutting inside and unleashing a low angled drive which beat Gadsby just inside the far post. A minute later Borough nearly doubled the lead when Truan broke through on the right and although forced wide by Gadsby he managed to turn the ball back into the path of Gary Fooks whose shot rattled the cross bar. Dorchester pressed forward looking for an equaliser and were unfortunate to see a curling free kick strike the upright before Shear collected the rebound. The final minutes were tense with Dorchester taking every opportunity to pump the ball forward and their best chance to level came with a dipping free kick from just outside the area which Shear got down well to smother in the closing minutes. Borough: Doug Shear, Matt Welsh, Tony White, Gary Fooks, Scott Orchard, Danny Herrington, Scott Bedward, Andy Barham, Anthony Warrington (Sean Hebdon 78), Lee James, Danny Chapple (Ben Truan 63).
