Poole Borough (2) 3, Hamworthy Recreation (0) 0. Edgar Maidment Trophy Saturday 13th August 2005 Borough Scorers: David Perry 29, 46; Sean Hebdon 36.
Borough lifted the first Dorset Premier silverware of the season as the League Cup winners convincingly overcame last seasons champions at Turlin Moor. The early exchanges saw limited chances at both ends, with Borough restricted to a long range effort from Mark Vincent which was deflected wide, while a Rec header from a corner went narrowly past the post. On 21 minutes Dave Perry got his head to a right wing corner, which was blocked by Kevin Leonard in the visitors goal and following a goalmouth scramble the loose ball was finally cleared by a defender. Borough took the lead on 29 minutes when a right wing corner was cleared only as far as Sean Hebdon whose shot cannoned off a defender into the path of Perry who tucked home the rebound. Four minutes later Rec's Danny Gibbons sent a through ball into the path of strike partner Dave Dick, but Scott Orchard reacted quickly to make a superbly timed tackle. On 36 minutes Borough doubled the lead when Hebdon diverted a Ben Truan shot from the edge of the area past Leonard. Rec however came close to pulling a goal back just before the break when Gibbons rode two tackles as he battled into the area but his final shot hit the upright. Half Time 2-0 Within a minute of the restart Rec went further behind as a ball through the middle from Orchard left the visiting defense flatfooted and Perry was able to draw Leonard before placing his shot past the veteran keeper. Rec pushed forward looking for a way back and a shot from Dick flashed over the bar while following another Hamworthy break down the right saw the final shot hit the side netting. Ben Truan carved out a chance for Borough on 76 minutes outpacing a defender down the right before gutting inside, but his shot from a narrow angle was cleared off the line. Lee James came on for Borough and made an immediate impact, teeing up Vincent whose shot was well saved by Leonard and also minutes later got on the end of a low cross from the right but lifted his shot over the bar. At the other end Dan
Burton in the Borough goal earned his clean sheet with
four minutes remaining getting down well to make a
reaction save to block a volley from the penalty spot.
The last chance however fell to Borough, with James again
the provider knocking the ball into the path of Dan
Herrington whose shot was cleared off the line. Borough: Dan Burton, Matt Welsh, Tony White, Gary Fooks (Shaun Clarke 87), Sean Hebdon, Danny Herrington, Scott Bedward, Mark Vincent (Keith Middleton 82), David Perry, Ben Truan (Lee James 77), Scott Orchard. Unused subs. Alex Gunn, Danny Young . Wimborne
Town (0) 1, Borough put in a good performance but want down to a Wayne Crucher goal five minutes from time at Cuthbury. Scott Orchard and Matt Welch played well in defence and with a bit more luck up front the Hornets may well have got something out of the game. Borough, however were unfortunate not to come away with a deserved draw, as the Magpies goal came while keeper Dan Burton still suffering from a late Stuart Cannie challenge which lead to the Wimborne striker being replaced on the orders of the Referee. Poole
Borough (1) 1, Borough Scorers: Carl Marshall 3. A Corfe Mullen side which is obviously building for a tilt at the Dorset Senior League title gave Borough a good test at Turlin Moor. Borough took the lead after only three minutes when a Danny Herrington free-kick was converted by Carl Marshall. Borh sides produced good football without an further goals although in the last 15 minutes Borough should have increased their lead by the visiting keeper made a good scrambling save to deny Ben Truan and both Alex Gunn and Lee James saw shots go narrowly wide in the final minutes. Borough (squad): Dan Burton, Dan Cockwell, Danny Young, Tony White, Mark Vincent, Scott Orchard, Shaun Clarke, Alex Gunn, Danny Moore, Danny Herrington, Matt Morris, Ben Truan, Lee James, Carl Marshall, Danny Chapple. Borough (0) 4, Borough Scorers: Ben Truan 48, 51, 55; Darren Abreu 86. In another 'game of two half's', Borough failed to break down their Wessex League visitors in the first period but a Ben Truan hat-trick within 10 minutes of the restart saw the Hornets cruise to victory. Verwood came out the stronger and took the lead on seven minutes as a flighted cross towards the left hand post eluded the home defence and a visiting forward was on hand to steer the ball home. Four minutes later Verwood nearly doubled their lead as a shot from the left flashed across the goalmouth and narrowly wide of the far post. Borough created a good opening on 17 minutes when Gary Fooks and Darren Abreu combined well down the right, but as Fooks looked ready to latch onto the return pass in the area, a visiting defender got across quickly to clear the danger. Immediately before the break Verwood again came close to increasing the lead as a right wing cross was met with a well-timed header but Dan Burton did well to tip the ball over the bar. HT 0-1. Truan was brought on for the second half and within three minutes he brought Borough level as he ran onto a through ball before slotting past the visiting keeper. Three minutes later Lee James found space down the left before squaring to Truan to finish with a well-struck shot. The hat-trick came on 55 minutes with James again putting a great ball into the path of Truan who drew the keeper before coolly placing his shot just inside the post. Darren Abreu was unfortunate not to cap a superb forward run into the area but his final shot was deflected wide. However he was rewarded in the final minutes, exploiting space in the visiting back line to latch on to a forward pass and with the keeper out of his goal he picked his spot well to convert. Borough (first half) : Dan Burton, Gary Fooks (Danny Young 39), Tony White, Mark Vincent (Dan Herrington 31), Sean Hebdon, Andy Barham, Alex Gunn, Matt Morris, Carl Marshall, Darren Abreu (Lee James 31), Paul Getley (Mark Vincent 36).
