Gillingham Town (2) 6, Poole Borough (0) 0. Dorset Premier League Saturday 24th September 2005 Following five straight victories Borough's run came to an abrupt end as they suffered their heaviest league defeat under the lights at Hardings Lane. Playing down the slope in the first half Borough carved out a good chance in the first minute as Gary Fooks did well to keep a wayward forward pass from crossing the goal line before centring to David Perry whose header went just over. Borough continued to have the best of the early exchanges and forced two corners before Scott Bedward made a strong run into the area but his shot went agonisingly wide. On 14 minutes a Gillingham cross from the left was met by a shot at the near post, but Dan Burton got across quickly to parry the ball for a corner. However the resulting flag kick was met by a bullet header at the far post from Dean Skelly to give the Gills the lead. Further Gills pressure saw Sean Hebdon head a cross over his own bar before the home side increased their lead on 23 minutes when a low shot from outside the area from Nick Ward eluded Dan Burton's dive and crept just inside the post. Borough were unfortunate not to pull a goal back before the break as firstly Bedward raced on to a through ball from Lee James but his angled drive drifted inches wide and Perry got his head to a right wing corner at the far post only to see it cleared off the line. Half Time 2-0. Borough's hopes of a comeback suffered a harsh blow seconds after the restart as a goal mouth scramble saw the ball cleared to Dan Cox 10 yards out who crashed home the loose ball. Borough continued to push forward looking for a way back but were left vulnerable at the back as the Gills used the slope well to launch some quick counter attacks. On 58 minutes Matt Welsh and Bedward combined well down the right and the resulting cross picked out Anthony Warrington who hammered his shot just wide of the upright. Further Borough chances saw a Fooks header from a corner go wide and Warrington shot on the turn just cleared the bar. However after another Borough attack broke down on 70 minutes Gillingham launched a swift attack and a high ball over the visiting defence picked out Ian Williamson on the left who steered his shot past the advancing Burton. Perry saw a shot blocked and the rebound from Ben Truan was also charged down while Burton did well to push a shot past the post. But on 78 minutes another through ball down the slope picked out Matt Lawrence who took the ball past Burton before slotting into an empty net. Burton made a good save to deny another Gills break, but Borough's misery was capped when Gavin Bendell took advantage of a defensive mix-up to grab Gillingham's sixth goal deep in injury time. Borough: Dan Burton, Matt Welsh, Tony White, Gary Fooks, Sean Hebdon, Danny Herrington (Scott Orchard 75), Scott Bedward, Anthony Warrington, David Perry, Lee James, Paul Getley (Ben Truan 61).
