Holt United (1) 1, Poole Borough (0) 1. Dorset Premier League Saturday 8th October 2005 Borough Scorer: David Perry 57. Following a difficult week for the club after the resignation of player-manager Tony White, Borough put on an impressively gutsy display and had the best of the game against the league leaders before coming away from Gaunts Common with a well earned draw. Borough experienced further problems before the kick-off as with keeper Dan Burton a late absentee, striker Anthony Warrington was forced to stand in between the sticks. Borough looked keen to prove a point straight from the kick-off as within two minutes David Perry found space down the left before cutting inside and forcing a smart block from Terry Martin in the home goal. Gary Fooks also came close with a long shot that went just wide and Perry saw a penalty appeal turned down after he was bundled off the ball following another strong run into the area. The Borough defence worked hard to protect Warrington, with Shaun Clarke back in the side keeping Jamie Holland quiet and Scott Orchard fitting in well as sweeper and Holt had to wait until the 13th minute for their first clear strike, which went wide of the post. On 23 minutes Borough were awarded a free-kick on the corner of the area and Perry's low drive was collected by Martin just inside the post. However against the run of play Holt took the lead on 27 minutes as Holland went down heavily under a challenge in the area and the referee stunned the Borough players by awarding a penalty. From Holland's spot kick Warrington got across well to push the ball past the post, only to be pulled up by the Assistant for moving off his line and with his second attempt Holland just managed to squeeze the ball under Warrington's dive. But Borough did not let their heads go down and a good piece of skill from Paul Getley saw him carve out some space down the left before he sent in a deep cross to Matt Welsh just inside the area whose first time shot curled just wide. A minute from the interval Dan Herrington whipped in a cross from the left which was headed off the line by a home defender, but from the counter attack the Bulls fed the ball through to Holland whose shot was punched out by Warrington. Half Time 1-0. Borough continued to have the best of the game after the break and on 50 minutes Lee James fed Fooks 35 yards out whose blistering shot took a deflection before going just the wrong side of the post. Sustained pressure finally brought its reward on 57 minutes as Perry broke clear of the home defence and lifted the ball over the advancing Martin before following through to ensure it crossed the line. Perry came close to giving Borough the lead two minutes later but his shot from the left was just wide of the far post, but at the other end Getley put in a superbly timed tackle to deny Holland. On 73 minutes Holt went down to 10 men after Holland was shown a straight red card following a challenge on Clarke. However this appeared to open the game up for both sides as Borough scented victory while Holt remained dangerous on the break and almost immediately Sean Hebdon had to head a right wing cross off the line while Fooks saw another long range shot pushed past the post by Martin. Borough were given a let-off on 84 minutes when a home forward broke clear but with only Warrington to beat he ballooned his shot over the bar, but at the other end Simon Edwards was denied by Martin after latching on to a centre after good work by James down the right. With the referee playing eight minutes of injury time Borough created further chances for Fooks who blazed a shot over the bar and Edwards whose half volley went agonisingly wide. Borough: Anthony Warrington, Matt Welsh, Danny Herrington, Gary Fooks, Sean Hebdon, Scott Orchard, Shaun Clarke (Aaron Woldon 78), Simon Edwards, David Perry, Lee James, Paul Getley.
