Poole Borough (0) 0, Holt United (0) 0. (after extra time) Dorset Premier League Cup Saturday 17th December 2005 Two well-matched sides produced an excellent game, which had everything except goals. Holt United have only conceded six goals in the league this season and strengthened by the recent signing of the experienced Graham Kemp were always likely to be difficult to breach, whilst Borough's recent defensive signing Danny Neville made his home debut to strengthen the Borough back four. Holt took the game to Borough from the kick-off and veteran striker Jason Lovell headed just over from a cross by Ollie Reynolds. Reynolds then burst through but just as he shaped to shoot Tony White put in a good tackle that took the pace off the shot. At the other end Alex Jones put in a great cross for Borough, but David Perry's resulting header was held by Terry Martin in the visitors goal. There was a strong competitive edge to the game and mid-way through the first half White and Scott Bradford clashed, and after the resulting skirmish both were booked. As the half progressed, chances were made at both ends and Perry had a shot saved by Martin's legs, whilst Borough's Stuart Amey had to be alert to palm away a corner at the near post. Half Time 0-0 The second-half continued at the same level and Jones produced a mazy run on the left by-line that took him past two defenders, but he elected to shoot from a tight angle rather than cross and Martin made the save. Holt then had a free-kick that Kevin Blackham lashed just wide. Lovell was always dangerous for Holt and had chances to break the deadlock, but could not get the ball past Amey. At the other end Borough's Lee Thomas, who had a match-long tussle with Kemp, had a number of shots that were just off-target. Just as it seemed that Holt were getting the upper hand, Borough had two good chances to win the game in the last ten minutes of normal time. First Simon Edwards made a good run down the right and with the Holt defence split, he crossed to Dan Young who was five yards out in front of goal. Young connected with the ball well, but Martin was quickly off his line to smother the shot and keep Holt in the game. Two minutes later Thomas found himself with a clear chance on goal, but could not get his shot on target. Full Time 0-0 With the game going into extra time Shaun Brooks took off Marney and Young and brought on Welsh and Clarke. The best opportunity to break the deadlock fell to Borough as Martin was forced to make a double save from Perry, to take the tie to a replay at Gaunts Common. Borough: Stuart Amey, Tony Marney (Shaun Clarke 91), Tony White, Danny Neville, Sean Hebdon, Alex Jones, Simon Edwards, Andy Barham, David Perry, Lee Thomas, Dan Young (Matt Welsh 91). Unused sub.
