Poole Town (0) 2, Poole Borough (0) 1. Dorset Senior Cup - Quarter Final Saturday 4th January 2005 Borough Scorer: David Perry 60. Borough's spirited performance saw the Hornets match their Wessex 1 neighbours over 90 minutes before an injury time strike from Ali Harris saw them eliminated at the Quarterfinal stage of the Senior Cup. Within the first minute Borough created an early opening for David Perry, which saw the Hornets top scorer shoot narrowly wide. Opportunities however were limited in the early stages as two sides keen to play football found themselves cancelling each other out in midfield. However as the half progressed the Dolphins began to create a series of chances, but the Borough defence held firm as on the half hour Stuart Amey did well to punch a free-kick clear under pressure and minutes later Tony White got across quickly to clear another Town break through. On 39 minutes a Town cross from the right picked out a home forward in space at the far post, but his header went wide, while the Borough back line had to defend deeply to scramble away a cross and Sean Hebdon was also forced to clear his lines under pressure as Town finished the half on top. Half Time 0-0 Events changed significantly after the break as Shaun Brooks brought on both Lee Thomas and Ben Truan which opened the game up and give Borough more options up front. Thomas's pace almost brought immediate rewards as he broke through the Town defence but home keeper Leigh Mitchener came out quickly to block the resulting shot. Within a munute Town had the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for a foul in Amey. On 51 minutes Borough's Tony Marney did well to cut across to deny a shooting chance for Carl Chivers, but three minutes later Chivers latched on to a long ball forward and outpaced Marney before lifting his shot over the advancing Amey to give the Dolphins the lead. However on 60 minutes Borough were back level as good move down the right saw Simon Edwards get to the goal line before pulling the ball back to Perry at the near post to rifle home his 20th goal of the season. On 65 minutes a Town attack saw the ball cleared only as far as Gary Funnell, who struck a powerful shot from 25 yards out which cannoned off the Borough crossbar and five minutes later a Dolphins cross from the right saw a near post header go wide. The rejuvenated Borough front line however continued to create problems on the break and after Thomas again outpaced the home defence down the right his centre just failed to find Perry before it was scrambled clear. Town however continued to work the Borough back line hard and on 78 minutes Amey was forced to punch clear under pressure and later a home striker drove a low left wing cross narrowly wide of the near post. But with two minutes of normal time remaining, Borough forced a corner, and the flag kick was driven low into the box where the home defence managed to scramble two shots off the line before a final attempt went wide of the upright. And Borough were forced to rue that missed opportunity as with the game moving into stoppage time a good passing move down the right from the Dolphins resulted in a cross field pass which found Harris on the edge of the area, who picked his spot to drive low into the bottom left hand corner and send the Dolphins into the Semi finals. Borough: Stuart Amey, Tony Marney, Tony White, Danny Neville, Shaun Hebdon, Alex Allen (Lee Thomas H-T), Simon Edwards (Shaun Clarke 83), Andy Barham, David Perry, Alex Jones, Dan Young (Ben Truan H-T). |
