Poole Borough (0) 1, Poole Town (0) 2. Mark Frowde Trophy @ County Ground, Hamworthy. Tuesday 13th September 2005 Borough Scorer: Anthony Warrington 52. In the first competitive fixture between the two sides the Dolphins took the honours and lifted the Mark Frowde Trophy, but the Borough players did the club proud as they first took the lead and then came within a whisker of taking the game into extra time against their neighbours who ply their trade two leagues above the Hornets. Borough almost had a dream start on two minutes as a three man passing move ended with the ball being threaded through to Scott Bedward on the left but his shot went just wide of the far post. However within a minute Town carved out an opening down the left and the resulting shot from a tight angle flashed across the face of the goal. On 8 minutes Borough again came close as the ball was laid back to Gary Fooks on the edge of the area who did well to make some space but his shot narrowly cleared the crossbar. It was end to end football though as again Town broke down the left two minutes later and the final shot was lifted over the advancing Dan Burton but it bounced wide of the post. Borough were unfortunate to loose Andy Barham after 15 minutes after he came off worse from a block tackle, but the Hornets continued create the better opportunities with Lee James shooting just wide after running at the Town defence and Bedward got to the by-line but his high cross was well cut out by Leigh Mitchener in the home goal with two Borough players in the box ready to convert. Borough's best chance of the half came on 37 minutes when David Perry battled well in the centre circle to win the ball, before sending a low forward pass into the path of Anthony Warrington but the last Town defender did enough to put him off and the final shot went wide. Coming up to the interval Town had their best spell of the game, forcing two corners, and from a break down the right, the ball was pulled back to a forward just outside the area, but the final shot was well blocked by Matt Welsh. Half Time 0-0 Borough continued to take the game to their opponents after the break and on 49 minutes a corner fell to Perry 5-yards out but his final shot cannoned off the upright. However the Hornets took the lead three minutes later following the break down of a Town attack the ball was fed quickly to James in the middle pf the park who sent an inch perfect pass into the path of Warrington on the left to run through and hit a low shot past the advancing Mitchener. Town, however equalised four minutes later as a long free-kick from their own half picked out Lee Phillips in the Borough area and his first shot rebounded off Welsh but the rebound fell kindly to Phillips to convert. The goal gave the Dolphins the required boost and they stepped up their game, stretching the Borough defence with some swift forward play. The Hornets though were still dangerous on the break and Warrington again got behind the Town defence to latch on to a through ball but Mitchener was out of his area quickly and managed to clear the danger with his feet. On 76 minutes the Borough defence were opened up by another slick attack from the Dolphins which created space for Carl Chivers to get a shot in but Dan Burton did well to turn the final shot past the post. However from the resulting corner the ball fell to Ross Edwards in front of goal who blasted in from close range. With the game opening up both sides began to find more space available although Town created the better of the opportunities with a number of chances going just wide. Borough however were still creating problems, as a Bedward cross from the left touch line was scrambled clear by a defender with Warrington ready to pounce at the far post, while Warrington also had a shot from the edge of the area which went just wide. However in the final minutes Borough sensed the chance to take the game into extra time and Perry produced a strong run to beat two defenders to a through ball down the middle and as Mitchener again came quickly out of his area the final shot took a deflection from the keeper and rolled agonisingly wide. Deep in injury time a Perry close range shot was deflected for a corner and the resulting flag kick from Tony White picked out Sean Hebdon on the far post but the Borough defender steered the ball just the wrong side of the post. And with the Referee almost ready to blow for full-time White sent over a deep free kick from the left and Perry rose at the far post to power a header on goal, but it was somehow kept out by a defender on the line to leave the Trophy on its way to Tatnam Farm. Borough: Dan Burton, Matt Welch, Tony White, Gary Fooks (Dan Young 85), Scott Orchard (Sean Hebdon H-T), Danny Herrington, Scott Bedward, Andy Barham (Danny Chapple 15), David Perry, Lee James, Anthony Warrington. |
