Season Round-Up

First Team

Borough were always going to struggle to emulate the success of the previous season and the final ninth position was a disappointment. but with the club experiencing two managerial resignations during the season, the fact that they were only four points from a fifth placed finish puts some perspective on the final placing.

The squad was affected by the move of top scorer Jamie Holland to local rivals Holt United, while Jimmy Edwards returned to Hamworthy United but Tony White brought in some new faces and Borough put on a convincing display to lift the first silverware of the season, the Edgar Maidment Trophy with a convincing 3-0 victory against champions Hamworthy Recreation.

However a tough first game at Sherborne resulted in Borough's first ever opening season defeat and was followed up with a midweek home reverse against bogey side Bournemouth Sports. But Borough followed up with four straight wins, before the club faced their first competitive fixture against Poole Town in the Mark Frowde Trophy where they matched their neighbours throughout the game before succumbing to a narrow 2-1 defeat.

The season, however turned on the 6-0 away defeat by Gillingham Town at the end of September which was followed up by a 4-0 home reverse by Hamworthy United Reserves resulting in Tony White resigning as player manager.

Giles Kilshawe and Andy Barham took temporary charge with their first match at title chasing Holt United, where the side bounced back with a well deserved 1-1 draw, and the duo also steered the team through to the second round of the Dorset Senior Cup with a win at Wareham Rangers before Shaun Books was appointed manager in mid-November.

With the ex-AFC Bournemouth midfielder in charge, Borough began to show improved form as they remained unbeaten in December, which included a Senior Cup victory against St. Pauls, Jersey and draws at Dorchester Town Reserves and against Holt United in the Dorset Premier League Cup. However it was later identified that Borough had fielded an ineligible player in the latter two fixtures, which saw them loose three points and they were removed from the League Cup.

Following up from their earlier Mark Frowde Trophy fixture, Borough met Poole Town in the Dorset Senior Cup quarter-finals at Tatnam Farm and the Hornets matched the Wessex 1 side over the 90 minutes, before again being beaten 2-1, this time defeat coming by way of a goal in stoppage time.

A six game unbeaten run from late January to early March, including an 8-2 victory at Stourpaine saw Sean Brooks pick up the February Manager of the Month award, but Borough's inconsistencies were still evident with those wins sandwiched by poor performances against two struggling clubs Bridport and Wareham. The latter defeat was the first of a run of three games without a point as both Sherborne and Holt picked up victories at Turlin Moor, and following further inconsistent performances Sean Books stepped down as Manager in Mid-August.

Giles Kilshawe again took up the reigns and steered the Hornets to their third victory of the season against Hamworthy Recreation but then followed disappointing defeats at Cobham and Westlands. However the season ended on a high note with an excellent team performance resulted in a 3-0 victory at home to Westland.

The club however can still take positives from the campaign. Despite missing over 10 games due to injury, David Perry beat his former strike partner Jamie Holland for finish league top scorer with the highest total for a Borough player since the club joined the DPL, averaging a goal a game. Also the club were finally able to utilise the bar facilities within the Pavilion at Turlin Moor, a pre-curser to establishing our own clubhouse on site.
