Poole Borough (4) 4,
Sturminster Newton United (0) 1.
Dorset Premier League
Saturday 3rd September 2005

Borough Scorers: Ben Truan 14, Paul Getley 17, Scott Bedward 35, Andy Barham 42.

Borough provided an assured performance as they cruised to a convincing victory against Sturminster Newton United at Turlin Moor. With David Perry away, Ben Truan led the attack and both Scott Bedward and Andy Barham returned to the starting midfield.

Sturminster were forced to weather some sustained Borough pressure from kick-off before the Hornets opened the scoring on 14 minutes when the visiting defence failed to clear a high cross into the box from the right and Ben Truan struck from 6 yards out to dispatch the loose ball.

A minute later a Scott Bedward overhead kick went just over and Andy Barham also came close after cutting in from the left as his shot from a narrow angle was cleared off the line. However the consistent Borough pressure paid dividends as the ball was fed in from the left and Paul Getley lobbed Neil Clarkson in the Sturminster goal from close range.

Sturminster carved out their first clear chance on 25 minutes as a cross from the right to the far post was sent back across the box by a visiting forward but the loose ball was scrambled clear. At the other end Dan Herrington did well to make space down the left and he drilled in a low cross across the goal and Gary Fooks just failed to connect at the far post.

On 32 minutes Borough were awarded a penalty when Truan was tripped in the area, but Tony White's thunderous spot kick came back off the cross bar. However Borough's third came within minutes, a courtsey of a fine solo effort from Scott Bedward as he cut in from the right before hitting a low shot onto the far corner.

Borough captain Andy Barham colleted the fourth three minutes from the break as he latched on to an inch perfect through ball from Lee James before slotting past the advancing Clarkson.

Half Time 4-0

Sturminster strengthened their rearguard action after the break but the Hornets still created clear chances, with an early shot from Matt Welch going just wide and Clarkson did well to divert low shot from Fooks past the post.

On 73 minutes Truan broke down the right and rode a tackle before sending a low centre across the box, which James just failed to connect to before the ball was cleared.

But it was the Cherries who scored a consolation goal ten minutes from time as Dean Haskett punished a defensive error to lob Dan Burton in the home goal.

Borough: Dan Burton, Matt Welsh, Tony White, Gary Fooks (Marc Vincent 63), Scott Orchard (Sean Hebdon 75), Danny Herrington, Scott Bedward, Andy Barham , Ben Truan, Lee James, Paul Getley (Danny Chapple 57).
