Poole Borough (1) 2, Swanage Town & Herston (1) 2. Dorset Premier League Saturday 4th March 2006 Borough Scorers: Alex Allen 43, David Perry 74. Borough and Swanage both maintained their recent unbeaten runs as they shared the points in closely fought draw. However the game ended in controversial fashion with Shaun Books being red carded as he tended to injured Dan Young who was later ambulanced to hospital with a suspected broken ankle. The first half was evenly balanced, but goal scoring opportunities were at a premium. Shaun Clarke came close for Borough on 16 minutes with a far post header from a corner which went just wide, while 10 minutes later a Swanage striker unleashed a long range shot on the run which went narrowly wide. On 29 minutes Swanage worked the ball well down the right wing and the resulting cross was met by with a low drive from 5 yards out, but Stuart Amey did well to block the shot before the home defence cleared the loose ball. The Swans however took the lead on 34 minutes as Mark Bryant found space down the left before cutting inside and placing a low shot past Amey. Borough however drew level two minutes from the interval when Sean Hebdon flicked on a corner from the right towards the far post and in a goalmouth scramble Alex Allen managed to force the ball over the line at the third attempt. Half Time 1-1 Borough came out stronger after the break, and within five minutes Clarke saw a long-range effort just clear the bar while the Swanage keeper was forced to parry a strike from Wassim Elhuadhi. Further Borough pressure on 61 minutes saw Allen beat the Swans gloveman to a through ball, but his resulting goal bound lob was cleared by a defender. On 69 minutes the complexion of the game changed when the Swanage keeper was sent off for handling outside the area, and Borough almost capitalised immediately when Jones took the resulting free kick quickly but his shot went agonisingly wide. Minutes later Elhuadhi was picked out in space but his shot past the stand in keeper also missed the target. However the Hornets finally forced home the advantage when David Perry converted an Alex Jones free kick from wide on the right with a glancing header at the near post for his 25th goal of the season. Swanage though were not prepared to lie down and a sustained period of pressure saw them equalise on 81 minutes as Alan Marsh latched on to a defensive clearance before unleashing a powerful drive from 25 yards out which Amey got a hand to but couldn't keep out. The game however will be remembered for the incident in the final minutes when Dan Young went down under a challenge wide on the left and with the referee refusing to stop the game immediately, the Hornets midfielder's treatment was initially delayed, and when representatives from both clubs finally got onto the field to tend to the stricken player the referee's focus appeared to be on removing them from the pitch, which lead to Books being harshly disciplined for his refusal to leave Young's side. Borough: Stuart Amey, Dan Young, Tony White, Sean Leaton, Sean Hebdon, Shaun Clarke (Tony Marney 86), Wassim Elhuadhi (Aaron Woldon 82), Andy Barham, David Perry, Alex Jones, Alex Allen. |
