Premier League Borough's poor vein of form continued, extending their run without a win to five games, as their failure to cope with some swift attacking play from the home side left them with a mountain to climb on more than one occasion, however the Hornets still showed enough fight to ensure the result was in doubt until the final whistle. Borough were quick off the blocks and within the first minute Steve Russell alluded his marker in the 6 yard box to get his head to a right wing cross from Martin Clarke but the ball cannoned off the home keeper's body. Two minutes later an Andy Barham free kick teed up Keith Middleton on the edge of the area but his low shot went narrowly wide. And Dan Young also went close as he broke clear down the right, but he overran the ball with his final touch and the keeper was out quickly to clear. However after the majority of early possession, Borough found themselves a goal down on 12 minutes when the Hornets lost the ball going forward and a swift clearance forward left the visitors defence out numbered and while Adam Nash was out quickly to block the first shot, but under pressure from two forwards Martin Clarke was unable to clear the loose ball in front of goal, and although an initial shot came off the post the rebound was tucked home by Ben Clarke. Worse was to come on 27 minutes when Ben Clarke latched onto an angled ball into the right hand edge of the penalty area who took the ball past Nash before slotting home from a narrow angle.. Borough though pushed forward looking for a way back and on 39 minutes a Barham free kick was scrambled past the post by the home keeper. From the resulting corner Sean Hebdon was impeded in the area and the referee awarded a penalty, which Keith Middleton tucked home. This lead to sustained Borough pressure up to the break although no further clear chances were created. Half Time 2-1 However any thoughts of an early comeback for Borough were dispelled within two minutes of the restart as Nash could only parry a stinging free-kick from 20 yards out and with the Hornets defence slow to react, the loose ball was dispatched by Tristion Gale at the second attempt. On 57 minutes Nash kept Borough in the game when he blocked a near post shot from a right wing corner at point blank range. Ross Mills came on for Russell and carved out a chance for Middleton with a headed flick on, but the Borough striker was unable to squeeze his final shot past the home keeper from a tight angle. Borough deservidely clawed themselves back into the game again on 69 minutes when Barham got to the right byline and pulled the ball back for Dylan Hooper to volley home from close range for his first senior goal. But almost immediately Borough's defence was again opened up by a quick through ball into the path Ben Clarke who coolly slotted past Nash to restore the two goal advantage and chalk up his hat-trick. Borough though came close to pulling a goal back again on 83 minutes as Hooper got on the end of a Mills centre from the right, but headed wide. Sadly Borough were forced to endure a seriously distracting final 10 minutes as the Bridport player coach took over the linesman's flag from one of his substitutes and seized the opportunity to direct his players from the touchline, even organising his defence for a Borough corner. Despite a number of complaints from the Borough bench resulting in three stoppages, the referee decided not to request the linesman's replacement, but made the two officials swap touchlines, which allowed the coaching to continue, all be it at a distance from the protesting Borough management. In the last minute of normal time Borough again move to within a goal of their opponents when Middleton's cross from wide on the right picked out Hebdon just inside the area who buried his shot into the bottom corner of the net. However despite pushing forward in numbers there was insufficient time left for Borough to salvage a point. |
