Premier League Borough are still looking for their first home win of the year after they found themselves 3-0 down in the first half of a wind affected match at Turlin Moor and despite pulling back to within a goal of their visitors there was no way back for the Hornets. With the wind in their favour in the first half, Cobham opened the scoring after 5 minutes when a Borough defender failed to cut out a high ball into the box, and Chris Mawer pounced to shoot past Doug Shear. On 13 minutes, Kieran Mulvey tested Simon Higgins in the Cobham goal with a 20 yard curling free kick, but from nowhere Cobham doubled their lead on 20 minutes with a Paul Tucker speculative shot from 25 yards out which went in off the post. Worse was to come for Borough as a high defensive clearance blew back towards the home goal and although there was a suspicion of offside, Mawer took his chance in the goal mouth melee to tuck the ball home. Just before the break though Borough gave themselves hope, as James Stickland latched onto a through ball from Mulvey and steered his shot past Higgins. Half Time 1-3 Borough were expecting to capatalise from the wind after the break, but it was Cobham who again started the stronger with a header from a right wing cross dropping just wide, while Stuart Merrell also sent a low shot just off target. Dan Young came close for Borough on 53 minutes when his shot from a tight angle on the right drifted just wide of the far post. However the Cobham defence were coping well coped with Borough's forays forward as they looked to capatalise on the pace of Stickland and Lee Thomas to get behind the Borough defence. But Borough's task became even more difficult when Thomas was sent off wuth 15 minutes to go after receiving a second yellow card following a clash with Higgins. Adam Nash was brought on to give the Hornets another option up front and on 84 minutes Steve Russell was denied by Higgins as his low shot from a corner was palmed away low down by the post. But from another corner three minutes later the ball came out to Nash who picked his spot to score his first goal for Borough. Borough threw players forward looking for the equaliser, leaving gaps at the back and Sean Leaton had to clear a Cobham shot off the line but at the other end a Russell cross from the left picked out Stickland but under pressure from a visiting defender the final shot went wide. There was still time Doug Shear to make two fine saves, first to deny a forward on a one on one situation which was closely followed by him back pedalling to palm the ball off he line after Merrell attempted to lob the Borough keeper. |
