Dorset Premier League Cup
Saturday 16th December 2006

Borough progressed to the quarter-finals of the League Cup with an assured display against their in-form neighbors, but having taken a two goal lead mid-way through the second half, a Cobham strike at the end of normal time left the home side with an anxious few minutes before the victory was assured

Borough started brightly and came close after 7 minutes with a floated free kick by Paul Harding from 20 yards out which Simon Higgins in the home goal did well to palm away. Higgins was in action four minutes later as he dived bravely at Steve Russell's feet after the Borough striker broke through.

At the other end Doug Shear was forced to make two saves in as many minutes, first reacting quickly to bundle away a right wing cross before collecting a rasping drive from Paul Tucker.

On 26 minutes Russell was again denied by Higgins as the visiting keeper got down quickly to collect a shot on the turn. But Russell finally got his reward on 30 minutes as he cut in from wide on the right before slotting a low shot past the advancing keeper.

However Cobham were level within three minutes, when a through ball picked out Bradley Asagba unmarked and the former Borough striker ran through before placing a low drive past Shear.

Cobham finished the half stronger and Shear made another fine save after a cross was deflected goalwards off of a defender and was in action again to block a shot from the resulting corner.

Half Time 1-1

The second half started quietly, with neither side able to fashion a clear chance until the 60th minute when Shear parried a Cobham free kick before collecting the ball at the second attempt.

As the half progressed, Borough began to take control and deservedly restored the lead on 68 minutes when Dan Young latched onto a through ball and appeared to be upended in the area, but with the referee playing the advantage Dillon Hooper was first to the loose ball to convert.

Five minutes later Borough doubled their lead when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and Paul Harding stepped up to curl the ball over the wall and just inside the left hand post..

Young carved out a chance to seal victory on 79 minutes with a run down the left but his final shot went just the wrong side of the upright. With 90 minutes gone, Cobham pulled a goal back as they broke clear of the Borough offside trap and with Shear coming out to narrow the angle the ball was squared to Tucker to divert into an empty net. But with Borough shutting up shop and playing the clock down when in possession they ensured there was no opportunity for the visitors to claw their way back into the game.
