Dorset Premier League
Saturday 20th January 2007

Two goals early into the second half were enough for Cranborne to notch up their first victory against Borough, who despite dominating the remainder of the game had only a Ross Mills score deep in injury time to show for their efforts.

Dan Young was in action within three minutes of the kick off as he made ground to execute a fine last ditch tackle as a home forward broke through. Borough though had the best of the early efforts and on 10 minutes home keeper Andrew Loader was alert to the danger and came out quickly to save at the feet of Dillon Hooper, as a Paul Harding forward pass sent the Borough striker through. Four minutes later Paul Getley got his head to a right wing corner at the far post, but his effort was cleared off the line.

Further pressure from the Hornets saw a Harding free kick curl just the wrong side of the post and on the half hour Harding was denied by an athletic save from Loader as his shot on the half volley seemed destined for the net. A minute later Andy Barham made a strong run to the edge of the area before laying the ball to Harding who was again denied by the home gloveman.

However immediately from the counter attack, Cranborne got behind the Borough defence but Doug Shear saved well with his legs. Shear was in action again minutes later collecting an awkward low drive at the second attempt and the Borough keeper was forced to make another block before the break as the home side finished the half stronger.

Half Time 0-0

Within four minutes of the restart Cranborne had taken the lead after Borough lost the ball on the halfway line and the Cranes broke down the right and the resulting cross was headed home by Barry Gerrard in front of goal.

On 56 minutes Borough came close to leveling when Hooper was picked out in space, but Loader again saved his side with a fine block. Borough were to rue the missed opportunity five minutes later as Nick Dashwood appeared to be offside as he latched onto a through ball, but the linesman's flag stayed down and although Shear got his hand on the first chance the rebound was tucked home.

Doug Shear was called on to make another fine save on 75 minutes diverting a long range shot at full stretch while within a minute Paul Getley found space for a shot but Loader was equal to the resulting shot.

With time running out for Borough, Simon Linard replaced Young and Sean Hebdon was pushed up into the attack, which appeared to provide the impetus required and Borough began to dominate the game. However all they had to show for their efforts was a Getley shot which went narrowly wide, until deep in injury time, Mills got his head to a high ball into the area, which looped over the keeper and into the net, but with only 60 seconds remaining it was too late to spark a Borough comeback.
