Poole Borough (4) 4, Cranborne (0) 0. Dorset Premier League Saturday 2nd September 2006 Borough Scorers: Paul Harding (pen) 19, Steve Russell 26, Paul Getley 37, Keith Middleton 41. Borough bounced back from their mid-week defeat at Sturminster Marshall with a convincing victory in difficult conditions against a Cranborne side who have already claimed the scalp of Gillingham this season. The Hornets had advantage of a strong wind in the firat half, but it did not assist them in the early exchanges as neither side was able to carve out a clear chance. However on 19 minutes Paul Getley saw a speculative shot from 20 yards out strike a defender's hand in the area and the referee awarded a penalty, which Paul Harding dispatched, sending Andrew Loader in the visitors goal the wrong way. Borough doubled their lead on 26 minutes as a Ross Mills header from a Harding left wing corner was cleared off the line, but the ball was retuned into the area by Dan Young and Steve Russell was on hand to head home from 5 yards out. Borough continued to dominate and a Harding 30 yard drive was well saved by Loader under his crossbar before on 37 minutes Harding lifted a through ball over the visiting defence and into the path of Paul Getley who ran through before deftly lobbing the advancing Loader. More was to follow for Borough as on 41 minutes a free kick into the area was headed down by Mills and Keith Middleton hammered home the ball from close range. Cranborne came close to pulling a goal back on the stroke of half time with a low shot which beat Paul Hubbard in the home goal, but Dan Young got back to steer the ball wide. Half Time 4-0 The Cranes were much improved with the wind at their backs and forced a series of early corners as they looked to salvage something from the game. Borough though continued to make in roads into the visitors area and on 59 minutes a good move down the right resulted in a cross from Harding which picked out Middleton with his back to goal who layed the ball back to Mills but a Cranborne defender did well to block the shot. Borough made a double substitution on 62 minutes which saw new signing from Hamworthy United, Martin Clarke make his debut. Cranborne remained dangerous and on 69 minutes Hubbard made a fine double save as he initially did well to steer a low drive onto his left hand post before blocking a shot from the rebound with his legs. Hubbard made another good block on 75 minutes to preserve his clean sheet, while at the other end Young came close to increasing the score after latchiing on to a low cross from the left, but his shot cannoned off of Loader's legs. |
