Dorset Premier League
Saturday 7th October 2006

Borough are still waiting for their first victory at the Avenue Road Stadium against the Magpies, however the draw was a fair result with both sides unable to make more of the chances they created. With Paul Getley and Ross Mills unavailable, Dylan Hooper stepped up from the Reserves to make an assured debut.

Neither side were able to fashion out an early chance and it took until 14 minutes for the first clear opportunity as an angled Borough ball from the right picked out Andy Barham, but his shot on the turn went wide. Two minutes later a James Stickland through ball split the home defence, picking out Keith Middleton but Dan Quinault in the home goal was out quickly to block the final shot.

Within a minute Middleton got in a shot from the edge of the area which went over, but Dorchester also carved out a chance as the ball was cut back from the by-line but Sean Hebdon was alert to the threat and diverted the resulting shot wide.

As the half progressed the Magpies began to take the initiative, but they were denied goal scoring opportunities twice due to an offside flag, and when they did break through down the right channel the final shot was off target.

Borough's best chance of the half came five minutes from the break as Hooper collected the ball on the right by-line centered low to the near post and Barham who just failed to squeeze the ball between the upright and keeper.

Half Time 0-0

The Magpies came out stronger after the break and immediately after the restart Adam Nash had to get down quickly to parry a close range shot. Nash was in action minutes later as he appeared to be impeded by a home forward as he stretched to collect a high centre and the loose ball was met by a home forward whose blistering shot was cleared off the line by Dan Young.

Once Borough settled, they began to make inroads into the opposition half and on 60 minutes Stickland did well to shield a forward pass on the edge of the area before teeing up Russell whose shot went the wrong side of the upright. However a minute later Borough took the lead as Stickland collected a throw-in just inside the Dorchester half and as the home defence backed off he unleashed a low drive from 35 yards into the bottom right corner of the net.

Borough looked to defend the lead, bringing on Griffin and Clarke to shore up the midfield and the Hornets had to weather some sustained pressure as the home side looked to get back in level terms. However the Hornets remained dangerous on the break and on 79 minutes Hooper battled well with a home defender before claiming a through ball on the edge of the area but for the second time in the game Quinault was out quickly to keep out the resulting shot.

With Dorchester unable to convert possession into shots on target it looked as though Borough would hold on for all three points, however with five minutes remaining of normal time the Hornets defence struggled to clear a Magpies corner and the loose ball was dispatched by Sam Clarke with a low drive from just outside the area.
