With a number of the first choice player out with injury, Borough brought in Jason Doe and Steve Rockingham to make their debuts, while Dan Cockwell returned to the heart of the Borough defence and provided an immense performance as the Hornets came close to forcing a draw at Gaunts Common.

Holt were quick off the blocks and Jason Lovell came close on four minutes when his far post header from a corner was deflected wide. A minute later Doug Shear was down quickly to deny a low drive from Lovell and was in action again minutes later when he tipped over an inswinging corner.

Having weathered the early onslaught, Borough began to make inroads into the Holt defence and on 25 minutes James Stickland saw a low shot from outside the area pushed past the post at full stretch by home keeper Terry Martin.

On the half hour Borough had a let off when Lovell teed up Dave Perry but the former Borough striker shot over from 10 yards out and before half time another Holt chance cleared the bar after a goal mouth scramble.

Half Time 0-0

The Borough defence was finally breached eight minutes after the restart when Steve Russell was adjudged to have handled the ball on the goal line and the penalty was duly converted.

On 59 minutes a challenge in the Borough half saw the ball ricochet into the path of Lovell but his first time shot went wide of the post, while a minute later Shear did well to save a shot at full stretch.

Borough brought on Shane Duggan to augment the front line and Borough again began to assert themselves although the best chances still fell to the home side as on 68 minutes Perry battled through on the right before shooting narrowly wide, while ten minutes later Shear made a fine double save to keep Borough in with a shout.

However, it took a stroke of luck for Holt to finally increase their lead on 82 minutes when a shot from the right by Perry took a wicked deflection off John Bates to leave Shear wrong footed.

Adam Nash came on with three minutes of normal time remaining to make his second Borough appearance as an outfield player and made an immediate impact, breaking down the right before cutting the ball back to Duggan who hammered the ball home from just outside the 6 yard box.

And Borough nearly snatched a share of the points in injury time as Martin was forced to make a fine save to deny a Duggan free kick from 20 yards out.
