Dorset Premier League
Saturday 27th January 2007

Borough endured a frustrating day as despite matching their opponents throughout the game, superior finishing was the difference between the sides, with a brace from prolific scorer Cris Rigler setting his side up for victory. The fixture saw Borough captain Sean Hebdon set a new club appearance record with 179 first team games to his credit.

Rigler was in action almost immediately as on four minutes he shot wide after being picked out by a cross from the left. And two minutes later Darren Rudd was forced to execute a fine tackle as Rigler latched onto a through ball.

Borough had their own chances to take an early lead as on eight minutes Lee Thomas just failed to convert a far post corner from inside the 6 yard box, and minutes later he was the target for a low cross from the right, but was unable to divert the ball goalwards.

Ross Mills tested visiting keeper Kevin Leonard with a long range dipping shot which the veteran gloveman was forced to parry over the bar and on 18 minutes Mills came close again as he headed a Harding corner just over.

But against the run of play, Recreation took the lead on 21 minutes when Borough keeper Doug Shear got his hand to a Rigler shot on the turn, but momentum took the ball over the line.

Borough carved out their best chance of the half on 33 minutes when a good move resulted in Mills finding space in the area and Thomas got on the end of the resulting low drive across goal, but steered the ball the wrong side of the post.

Half Time 0-1

Any thoughts of a Borough fight back were dealt a blow within a minute of the restart as the home defence were caught out by a break down the left and the resulting low cross picked out Rigler at the far post who made space to slot past Shear.

Borough though continued to press, looking for a way back and Dillon Hooper shot narrowly wide after good work from Thomas, while on 53 minutes a Matt Morris cross from the left fell to Andy Barham whose shot beat Leonard but was cleared off the line. Rec. were still dangerous on the break though and Shear was forced to make a good save at close range.

Again Borough saw their luck run out in front of goal as on 60 minutes a curling cross from Dan Young came back off the crossbar and when the rebound was driven back into the area, Young connected with a bullet header which Leonard kept out with an outstanding reaction save.

Two further chances for Borough on 70 minutes saw a Hooper dummy allow Thomas through on goal, but Leonard blocked the shot and almost immediately the keeper also denied a shot from Mills.

Rec went down to 10 men with a minute of normal time remaining as Allan Scott was given a yellow card for a foul and almost immediately saw a second for comments to the Referee. But with Borough pushing forward in numbers, they were caught on the break allowing John Peat to run through and convert past Shear at the second attempt.
