Dorset Senior Cup
Saturday 4th December 2006

Borough progressed into the third round of the Senior Cup with ultimately a comfortable victory against Dorset Senior League opposition, but Okeford certainly tested the Hornets in the first half and were unfortunate not to turn around level before the home side finally took control of the game after the break.

Okeford took a surprise lead on 7 minutes when a forward broke into space down the left before sending in a low cross which the Borough defence struggled to clear and Alan Ives was on hand to dispatch the loose ball. Within a minute though Borough were back on level terms as Matt Morris knocked the ball into the path of Darren Rudd who slotted a low shot past the keeper.

John Bates and Paul Getley both shot wide for Borough but Okeford carved out a chance after a left wing cross picked out a visiting forward unmarked inside the area Adam Nash was out quickly to smother the ball at the strikers feet.

As the half progressed Borough began to take control and on 26 minutes Lee Thomas battled well to claim a long clearance forward from Nash but his final shot on the turn went just wide. Four minutes later Dylan Hooper fed Thomas down the right and his low shot beat the advancing keeper but was cleared by a defender tracking back.

Ross Mills also came close on 34 minutes when his downward header from a corner was turned past the post by the Okeford keeper but from the resulting flag kick the gloveman could only palm away a Hebdon header and Thomas was on hand to bundle the ball over the line.

In the final minutes of the half Okeford came within inches of leveling the score as the home defence were caught out by a long ball into the area which picked out a forward unmarked but he headed over from 6 yards out.

Half Time 2-1

Within minutes of the restart, Dan Young saw a close range shot blocked by the visiting keeper who also denied a Paul Harding drive after a strong run down the left. On 57 minutes the Okeford keeper was in action again as initially he could only parry a right wing cross from Rudd but he recovered quickly to claim a shot on the rebound by Mills.

Borough finally increased their lead two minutes later when Getley's deep centre from the left picked out Mills whose headed flick on beat the keeper.

A home victory was assured on 71 minutes when Hooper was pulled back by his shirt as he hade a strong run into the area and although Hebdon's first penalty kick was saved by the keeper, the linesman had spotted that the gloveman had come off his line to make the block and the Borough skipper made no mistake in blasting home the re-take.

With Borough now in the ascendancy the Okeford keeper made two further saves to deny Hebdon with a shot on the spin and a late chance by Harding which was well parried, but the Hornets had done more than enough to progress a potentially difficult tie.
