Borough fell to a heavy defeat at the Grove as with a strong wind at their backs the home side raced into a 4-0 lead before the break giving the Hornets little chance of recovery once the conditions were in their favour.

The first quarter of an hour was even with Paul Harding curling a free-kick from outside the area just the wrong side of the post, while a firm Portland header from a cross from the left struck the top of the crossbar.

The Blues took the lead on 16 minutes when a well worked move down the left resulted in a low centre which was dispatched at the near post by Adam Linaker. Worse was to come for Borough a minute later when a quick clearance forward picked out Matt White in space who picked his spot to slot the ball past Adam Nash.

Borough had to keep the ball on the ground to make any progress and scoring opportunities were a rare commodity but on 25 minutes Darren Rudd and Dylan Hooper combined well down the right before Hooper crossed into the area and Ross Mills got his head to the ball, but his attempt was off target.

Portland increased their lead on 31 minutes as a long punt forward wrong footed the Borough defence who looked in vain for an offside decision, leaving Matt White to run through and Nash came out quickly but was unable to cut out the ball leaving the forward to slot into an empty net.

Nash kept the score down with a fine save as he collected a shot at full stretch, but was beaten again on 39 minutes when a cross from the right was headed home by Ross Carmichael at the far post.

Lee Thomas came close to pulling a goal back on 41minutes with a header from a right wing corner, but the ball drifted just the wrong side of the post, however the Blues continued to use the conditions well on the counter attack and before the break saw a low shot from the left flash across the Borough goal with no one on hand to deliver the finishing touch.

Half Time 4-0

With the wind in their favour Borough started the second half brightly forcing two early corners. However any thoughts of a fight back were dealt a further blow on 56 minutes when Thomas was given a harsh yellow card for the way he attempted to extricate himself from an opposition player after he was on the receiving end of a reckless slide tackle and that card immediately turned to red following his subsequent complaint to the referee.

Borough made a double substitution with 20 minutes remaining, Steve Russell and Dan Young replacing Darren Rudd and Matt Morris but they were unable to turn possession into goal scoring chances and as the half went on Portland began to make in-roads again and Nash did well to palm away a long range drive before collecting a shot from the resulting corner.

However the Borough keeper could do nothing on 76 minutes as the visiting defence was again stretched on the counter attack and a cross field pass found Callum Ross-Jennings in space on the right and his resulting shot deflected off a Borough defender and into the top corner of the net to increase the home sides margin of victory.
