Two goals in the last 10 minutes saw Portland snatch all three points at Turlin Moor in the first senior fixture between the two clubs. Borough were missing Paul Harding who suffered a fractured cheekbone at Gillingham last weekend and Matt Morris who picked up an injury in the midweek friendly against Wimborne.

Portland carved out an early chance when a right wing cross picked out Matt White unmarked in front of goal but he headed wide. On 12 minutes Ross Mills found space in the Portland area and his back heel wrong footed the visiting defence by Keith Middleton just failed to connect.

Three minutes later a Portland shot was diverted from goal by a deflection from Steve Russell and from the resulting corner Paul Hubbard did well to punch the ball clear. However Borough were dealt a blow on 18 minutes when Hubbard suffered a shoulder injury after being challenged to a cross by White and after lengthy treatment had to be replaced by Middleton between the sticks.

The Borough defence worked hard to protect the stand-in keeper and for the remainder of the half, the Blues were restricted to a long range shot which curled wide and also a quick free kick that was also off target. On 39 minutes the Portland keeper was penalised for picking up a back pass and when Russell teed up the free kick for Mills the shot went just over. And immediately before the break, Andy Barham floated in a free kick from 25 yards which Paul Getley met with a header at the left hand post but the ball went narrowly wide.

Half Time 0-0

Borough stepped up the pressure in the second half and within three minutes Mills saw a shot on the turn blocked by the visiting keeper. On 51 minutes Russell lifted a through ball over the visiting defence which James Stickland latched on to and lobbed the keeper, but with the Borough forward following through the ball dropped agonisingly wide.

Another Borough chance two minutes later saw a Getley forward pass put Mills into space but his first time shot was collected by the keeper. Portland however still posed a threat and a free kick picked out a forward unmarked in the area but he headed wide.

It was Borough though who opened the scoring on 71 minutes after Stickland was pulled back on the edge of the area and Andy Barham curled the resulting free kick into the top right hand corner of the net. Borough continued to push forward looking to seal the game and Stickland latched on to a through ball from Mills but the Blues keeper was out quickly to block the shot.

Middleton was called into action on 77 minutes and he did well to palm away an overhead kick at full stretch, but three minutes later he was finally beaten when White carved out space just outside the area before dispatching a low shot which squeezed just inside the right hand post.

And worse was to come for Borough five minutes later as Portland took the lead after the otherwise solid Martin Clarke lost the ball in the centre circle and Adam Lineker punished the error by running through and dispatching his shot past Middleton.

Borough laid siege to the visitor's goal looking for an equaliser and Mills saw a shot deflected wide off a Blues player while Stickland was set up by Mills but as he shaped to shoot a defender got across quickly to clear. And deep in injury time Middleton came forward for a free kick and although the ball fell to him just outside the area, his shot cleared the crossbar.
