Senior Cup A solid defensive performance from Borough saw the Hornets hold their Wessex Premier league neighbours until second half stoppage time when they were finally beaten by two late strikes which saw their close neighbours go through to the Quarter-finals. There were changes in the Borough line-up with Andy Barham returning to the side after a six week absence while Paul Getley and Darren Rudd were unavailable and Doug Shear stood in between the sticks for the injured Adam Nash. The Dolphins came out and controlled the first 15 minutes as Borough struggled to adjust to the faster pace of their game. On four minutes Richard Glenister appeared to have broken through the Hornets defence but Dan Young executed a well timed tackle to deny the veteran forward. Five minutes later the Dolphins broke down the left and the resulting low cross was met by a forward at the far post, but he shot wide. Borough's first foray on 11 minutes saw Ross Mills place a well weighted pass into the path of Dylan Hooper but his first time shot was collected by Max Frampton in the home goal. However Town came straight back and Sean Hebdon did well to hold off Steve Richardson as he attempted to latch on to a loose ball, allowing Doug Shear time to collect. As the half progressed Borough began to enjoy more possession and under pressure from the visiting forwards a Harding free kick from wide on the left had to be scrambled for a corner. On 23 minutes Hooper made space down the left and his cross was met by a Mills header which went just wide and three minutes later another Harding free kick was only cleared as far as John Bates on the edge of the area and his shot forced a full stretch save from Frampton. Further Borough chances saw a Harding long range drive dip just over the bar and with Mills bearing down Frampton did will to get his hand to a cross to deny the Hornets forward. At the other end Shear was called on to make a series of fine saves including a superb block at point blank range and on the stroke of half time he tipped an inswinging cross onto the bar. Half Time 0-0 The Dolphins again opened with some sustained pressure and within two minutes of the restart, a Shear clearance was latched onto by a home forward, but a Borough defender was across quickly to block the shot. On 50 minutes Town again broke down the left and the resulting low cross alluded the home forwards before being cleared at the far post. And the woodwork saved Borough three minutes later when Richardson latched onto a deep corner but his shot cannoned off the bar. Borough still caused problems on the break and on 63 minutes a inch perfect pass from Mills picked out Bates in space but a home defender was across quickly to deny the shot. However within two minutes Town were again on the offensive and Shear was unable to hold a low free kick but the resulting shot on the rebound went wide. Lee Thomas was introduced up front to trouble the home defence and he made an immediate impact, latching onto a forward pass from Harding but his shot was off target and within minutes Mills was provider as Thomas again found space on the right and his low shot beat the advancing Frampton but went wide of the left upright. With time running out Shear made another telling intervention, punching clear a deflected shot under pressure while at the other end Steve Russell shook off a tackle in the centre circle before his forward pass appeared to have put Dan Lomax clear but again the home defence recovered quickly to deny the chance. With extra time an almost certainty Borough were dealt a cruel blow five minutes into stoppage time as Russell was dispossessed just outside the area and a swift ball forward found Glenister unmarked by the left post who made no mistake in steering the ball home. With another four minutes on the clock a corner from the left was met by Richardson at the far post who finished with a thumping header and for the third successive fixture between the two sides Borough were again ruing the concession of a late goal which finally separated the sides. |
