Senior Trophy Final
Borough lifted the Dorset Senior Trophy in its inaugural season following a battling display against the Chickens at the Avenue Road Stadium. The Hornets attacked from kick-off and after only two minutes Dan Chapple floated a free kick into the Chickerell area which Dan Cockwell got his head to but was unable to direct goalwards while in the resulting scramble in the area Kieran Campbell's shot was blocked by the opposition keeper at his left hand post. A minute later Dan Cockwell gave Borough the lead he ran onto a clearance from the Chickerell defence and struck a superb shot from 40 yards out which dipped over the keeper and into the net. From the restart Chickerell came close to equalising but Elliott Broome denied them with a close range block. After such a pulsating start, neither side was able to fashion any clear chances until the 27th minute when Chickerell sent a long ball into the edge of the Borough area which split the Hornets defence and picked out a lone striker, but a last ditch tackle from Paul Leaton denied a clear shot on goal, but the referee awarded the Chickens a free kick and Leaton sustained concussion which lead to him being substituted and later hospitalised, while the shot from inside the Borough D came back off the wall before being cleared to safety. Chickerell continued to push forward and Chris Lyth made a telling interception in the area to deny a forward but at the other end a Borough free kick was cleared to Campbell outside the area but he shot over. Chickerell finished the half on the attack but Cockwell made two fine tackles to keep Borough on top at the interval. Half Time 1-0 Chickerell stepped up the pressure after the break and Cockwell was in early action charging down a shot while twice the Chickens saw a cross flash across the Borough goal with no-one on hand to apply the final touch. On 61 minutes a Chickerell forward broke clear of the Borough defence but Broome was out quickly to deny the shot. Further pressure saw the Chickens finally draw level on 68 minutes when a free kick from wide on the right driven into the area was met by a diving header from Peter Bockonko which beat Broome just inside his left hand post. However Chickerell's celebrations were short lived as three minutes later Steve Russell sent a teasing ball forward behind the Chickens back line and with defender and keeper struggling to clear on the edge of the area Campbell stole in to toe poke the ball goalwards and then ran through to bundle it home. Chickerell pushed forward looking for a way back saw a shot go over the bar while Cockwell was forced to head off the line after a shot beat Broome. Ricky Mee came on in the final minutes and had the ball in the back of the net after heading home a long pass forward, but is was disallowed for offside and although the Chickens finished the game pushing forward for a way back, Borough held on to claim victory. |
