Dorset Premier League
Saturday 29th August 2006

Borough crashed to their first defeat of the season against newly promoted Sturminster Marshall at Churchill Close, as despite enjoying the majority of the second half possession, the Hornets failed to break down a well organised home rearguard, who defended their half time lead before sealing victory with a break away goal to seal all three points.

The early chances fell to Sturminster and on 4 minutes when the Borough back line failed to cut out a long clearance from defence a home forward latched on to the ball but shot over. Two minutes later a low free kick into the area fell to a home striker and Adam Nash did well to palm away the shot.

Borough came back and on 9 minutes Paul Getley found space down the left and his cross picked out Keith Middleton in front of goal, but former Hornets keeper Paul Maitland was equal to the shot. On 11 minutes James Stickland whipped in a right wing centre which Steve Russell just failed to connect to at the near post and Middleton arrived at the back stick but shot wide.

However within a minute Sturminster were in front as Nash was unable to hold an inswinging corner and the loose ball fell to Dan Haysom who picked his spot through a packed goal line. Nash was then called on to make a fine save low down by his right hand post as a corner looked to be going in after taking a deflection off Simon Linard.

Borough though began to exert some sustained presure and Paul Harding's floated cross from the left was met by Paul Getley unmarked at the far post, but Maitland was across quickly to block the resulting header. Maitland also denied Stickland when he drove in a shot from 20 yards out and five minutes from the interval Getley's shot from the edge of the area had Maitland beaten, but the ball struck the crossbar.

Half Time 1-0

Borough came out after the break and continued to press for the equaliser and on 53 minutes a Russell header from a left wing Harding corner narrowly ceared the bar. Ross Mills came on for Stickland to make his Borough debut and came close on 66 minutes when a free kick was headed on by Middleton and the final shot on the half volley went just over.

However Sturminster's work rate was such that they were able to keep bodies behind the ball and break down successive Borough attacks. And the home side sealed victory 10 minutes from time when Borough lost the possession in midfield and the ball was pumped forward into the path of a home forward on the left who lobbed the advancing Nash and his strike partner was on hand to steer his shot into an empty net.
