Dorset Premier League
Saturday 21st April 2007

Westlands lifted the Dorset Premier League title for the second time after a late winner from Mike Rousell saw the Somerset side to victory at Turlin Moor, but Borough can take heart from a much improved performance as they matched Sports for much of the match and better finishing in the first half may well have changed the complexion of the game.

Borough got off to the worst possible start against the Champions elect when after only five minutes Rousell went down rather easily following a challenge from Matt Morris in the area, but the referee was quick to award the penalty and Ian Harris stepped up to slot home the spot kick. Westlands nearly doubled their lead on 15 minutes when Simon Linard was dispossessed by Harris just outside the area but the Sports skipper shot straight at Adam Nash.

However as the half progressed Borough began to make inroads into the Westland half and deservedly drew level on 19 minutes when James Stickland sent a deep cross in from the left which picked out Lee Thomas at the far post whose shot came off the upright, but Stickland arrived in the area to hammer home the rebound. A minute later Borough nearly took the lead when a through ball from Dan Cockwell send Thomas clear, but he shot just cleared the bar.

Borough continued to take the initiative and on 28 minutes Stickland latched on to a Shaun Leaton cross from the right but his first time shot was blocked by Tim Poaroe in the visiting goal. Two minutes later Leaton set up a move with a ball wide to Thomas and made ground to collect the return pass but was unable to get a shot on target.

The visitors were certainly rattled by Borough's swift attacking moves and at times had ten men behind the ball, but the Hornets continued to dominate and on 36 minute Thomas latched onto a wayward defensive header but shot wide, while five minutes before the break John Bates got his head to a right wing cross from Leaton at the far post but the ball dropped wide.

Half Time 1-1

Westlands however turned the game around in the second half and Borough were left soaking up pressure for much of the half. Within three minutes of the re-start the visitors saw a header from a free kick go narrowly wide. On 59 minutes Harris collected a cross in space but his shot was off target and the home defence managed to scramble the ball clear.

On 69 minutes a quick defence clearance saw Rowsell clear in space, but Dan Young got back quickly to make a well timed challenge on the edge of the area to deny the visiting striker.

Borough chances were limited, but Kieran Mulvey came close on 71 with a curling free kick from 20 yards out which went just over and three minutes later Young started Borough's best move of the half with a strong forward run before slipping the ball inside to Steve Russell who immediately sent Thomas through on goal but his well struck shot was denied by a fine save from Poaroe.

At the other end, Adam Nash saved with his legs at point blank range before Westlands broke the deadlock on 81 minutes when a through ball sent Rousell clear of the Borough defence and he made no mistake to steer his shot past Nash.

Borough pushed forward looking for a way back, but it was Nash who was forced to make another good save to deny Harris at close range.
