Dorset Premier League
Saturday 15th March 2008

Despite controlling much of the game and taking the lead early in the second half through debutant Paul Honeybun, Borough were unable to maintain the initiative in difficult conditions at the Recreation Ground and the home side took their chances well to secure victory.

Blandford created the majority of the early pressure and could have taken the lead in the first minute when they broke down the right, but Lee Sanders got across well to intercept the final cross with two home players lining up in th area to receive the ball.

Borough's first clear chance came on 15 minutes when Mariusz Iglewski's low shot went just past the right hand post and from that point the Hornets started to step up the pressure. On 26 minutes Ken Strong rode two tackles as he took the ball from defence to the edge of the Blandford area, before squaring to Callum Mcleod, whose low drive was deflected over the bar.

Two minutes later Dan Young made a strong run forwards before slipping the ball wide to Honeybun whose shot from a tight angle stung home keeper Shane Hannan's gloves, while Hannan was called on again within seconds to divert a long range effort from Iglewski over the bar.

Blandford had a header from a corner clear the bar, but the majority of the pressure still came from Borough, who laid siege to the home goal, forcing five flag kicks in succession which first saw Hannan tip over a close range header from John Bates and follow up by pushing a Mcleod shot on the turn past the post.

Half Time 0-0

Borough continued to maintain the initiative after the break and within three minutes of the restart Honeybun sent Mcleod clear of the home defence and he lifted the ball over the advancing Hannan only to see it strike the outside of the post.

Within a minute Mcleod saw an overhead kick headed off the line but the ball was cleared only as far as Honeybun who curled his shot from 20 yards out just inside the left hand post to give Borough the lead.

On 52 minutes Honeybun nearly got his second with a fiercely struck free kick from the edge of the area which cannoned off the bar. And Borough were to rue that miss three minutes later when Hornets keeper Dean Burton was unable to hold on to a left wing corner and in the resulting goalmouth scramble Phil Boulton stabbed the ball home.

Honeybun came close to putting Borough back in front on 63 minutes with a low shot which forced a scrambling save from Hannan and three minutes later Mcleod got clear of the home defence but his final shot went wide.

Burton was the quieter of the two keepers but he was forced to tip a shot over from a tight angle on 70 minutes while at the other end Iglewski came close with a low drive after cutting in from the right.

However against the run of play Blandford took the lead on 78 minutes with Jamie Filkins arriving at the near post to head home a left wing corner. Borough pushed forward in numbers looking for a way back and the home side capitalised when an attack broke down, as they mounted a quick break down the right and the ball was centered for Simon Hyde to steer home from close range.

Borough continued to push forward and Hannan made a superb save to deny a shot from Iglewski which took a wicked deflection and the home keeper kept Borough out again in the final minutes, palming away a Honeybun free kick to ensure his side finished with all three points.
