Premier League Borough maintained their 100% record with a narrow victory against a talented young Bridport side, but with the Hornets struggling to get into their stride, the result remained in doubt up to the final whistle. Bridport showed the early initiative, although neither side carved out a clear cut chance until the 16th minute, when the Bees were awarded a free-kick just outside the area which Gareth Maidment curled over the Borough wall and although Doug Shear got his hand to the ball it went in off the post. Borough though were back in the game within a minute as Steve Russell found space down the left wing and sent a low cross into the area, picking out Ross Mills unmarked to bundle the ball home from close range. Borough now took the game to their opponents and the Bridport keeper denied Mills his second goal with his legs, while Jamie Holland curled a shot from the right just the wrong side of the far post and Scott Bedward's low cross from wide on the right found Lee Thomas 5 yards out, but the again the keepers legs kept the ball out. The Bees though were still dangerous on the break and a visiting forward got on the end of a right wing cross, but headed over, while Shear did well to collect a downward header from a corner. However it was Borough who took the lead for the first time on 37 minutes, when Mills picked up the ball on the edge of the area and fed Holland down the right, who got behind the defender before pulling the ball back to Mills in front of goal to slot home. Any thought of Borough going into the break with a narrow lead however were dispelled on 41 minute when a Bridport cross from wide on the left was headed home by Andrew Potter who arrived unmarked at the near post. Half Time 2-2 Borough started the second half on the attack and forced a succession of right wing corners as they looked to re-gain the initiative, but their first clesr chance of the half didn't come until 65 minutes when a Bedward shot from 25 yards out drifted just wide. However this seem to spark Borough into action and a minute later Thomas broke down the right and his cross was palmed away by the keeper into the path of Russell who shot wide, while on 69 minutes Shane Duggan saw his header from a free kick go just over. The goal finally came for Borough on 72 minutes when they were awarded a free kick on the left hand edge of the area and Bedward whipped the ball in low towards the goal and with both defenders and forwards unable to get a touch on the ball it crept just inside the far post. On 74 minutes Thomas again outpaced the visiting defence to pick up a through ball down the right and lobbed the advancing keeper but the ball went over and on 83 minutes a Borough corner was cleared only as far as Russell on the edge of the area, but he blasted his shot over. Bridport though sensed they still had a chance to pick up their first point of the season and pushed Borough back in the final minutes and saw a far post header from a right wing free kick go just the wrong side of the upright while in injury time Shear did well at full stretch to deflect a long range free kick wide for a corner, which then resulted in Borough having to survive three successive flag kicks before finally clearing the ball. With the referee playing 10 minutes of stoppage time, Borough fstill had time to push forwards themselves with Thomas beating the visitors offside trap again before sending a low cross into the area and Mills just failed to get a touch at the far post which would have completed a well deserved hat-trick. |
