Borough sealed their first win since mid-September in a hard fought encounter in the local derby against Cobham, the Hornets victory sealed by a brace from Lee Diaper making only his third start since signing in the close season after picking up an injury in his debut.

After a quiet opening, with neither side able to fashion a clear chance, Borough came close on 12 minutes when Diaper was teed up by Lee Thomass on the edge of the area, but his shot on the turn went the wrong side of the post. Two minutes later a free kick wide on the right was rolled to Steve Russell but his drive was off target.

Two minutes later Cobham had a clear opportunity to take the lead as a low cross from the right ran across the goal and Vukevic arrived unmarked at the far post, but somehow managed to miss the open goal.

On 21 minutes Russell tested Cobham keeper Higgins with a low shot from the right which stung the keepers gloves, but almost immediately Russell was provided with another chance from a similar position and his low drive was diverted past the keeper by Thomas from close range. However within three minutes Cobham were level as another cross from the right picked out Luke Dawes 5 yards out, to side foot home.

Borough though provided a the perfect response on 26 minutes when a clearance was deflected into the path of Diaper, who ran through from the centre circle before taking the ball past Higgins and converting from a tight angle.

The Hornets had to soak up some Cobham pressure as the half drew to a close with the best chance on 36 minutes a corner from the right clipped the Borough bar, but a final chance for the home side saw a Cobham defender desperately heading over his own bar as John Bates closed on to a right wing cross from Diaper.

Half Time 2-1

The game remained in the balance after the break, but Diaper gave the Hornets some breathing space on 59 minutes when he collected a pass on the right hand corner of the area and unleashed a stunning drive which beat Higgins just inside his right hand post.

On 63 minutes Dawes tested Wayne Robbins with a long range effort which the Borough keeper did well to divert onto the bar and over. But from the resulting corner a Borough defender was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball in the area and Stuart Merrell stepped up to divert the resulting spot kick.

With the game on a knife edge, Borough had a let off on 72 minute when a long Cobham clearance sent Dawes clear but he sent his first time shot wide of the upright. Three minutes later Russell tested Higgins with a long range shot but the keeper was down quickly to block and seconds later Robbins was in action at the other end to collect a shot under his crossbar.

Into the final fifteen minutes Borough continued to push forward looking to put the result beyond doubt and Thomas forced a fine save from Higgins with a downward header from a Diaper cross, but at the other end Borough were fortunate to see a shot blocked after a scramble in their area leaving the home supporters relieved to collect all three points at the final whistle.
