Premier League Borough picked up their second away win of the season after a close fought battle at Pennys Lane with the Hornets having Wayne Robbins to thank for some superb saves to keep Borough in the lead at the break and after Lee Thomas was sent off mid way through the second half it took some tenacious defending to ensure Borough took home all three points. Borough pressured from kick off and created the first chance on four minutes when Kieran Campbell chested a centre into the path of Thomas, whose final drive was deflected wide by a defender. The Hornets continued to have the best of the early exchanges, but struggled to create a clear opportunity until 13 minutes when a Thomas shot on the turn was collected by the home keeper. But Borough's pressure finally saw them take the lead three minutes later when a weak headed clearance in the area by former Borough defender Sean Hebdon fell to John Bates whose first time shot cannoned in off the bar. Cranborne though began to make in roads into the Borough defence and on 21 minutes the home side broke down the right and the resulting centre picked out a home forward at the far post, but his final shot went wide. Two minutes later a Cranes forward spun away from the Borough defence to latch onto a through ball down the middle but he put his shot wide of the upright with just Robbins to beat. The home side continued to carve out the better chances and when the ball was whipped in from the left Robbins got across his goal to make a fine instinctive block to deny a home forward at the far post, while four minutes from the break Robbins made another superb save in a one on one situation as the Borough defence was again breached by a forward running through. Half Time 0-1 Cranborne drew level three minutes after the break in controversial circumstances, as the linesman appeared to indicate an offside after Adam Beatie latched onto a forward pass, before lowering his flag and allowing the ball to be taken through and slotted past Robbins. The resulting Borough protests were turned away by the referee, with Andy Barham booked in the process. Borough however were back in the lead within five minutes as Thomas went down under a challenge as he ran into the area and Gary Fooks stepped up to convert the resulting penalty. The game turned on an incident on 63 minutes after Thomas was maliciously felled in an off the ball incident out of sight of the referee, but within a minute the Borough striker went into a full blooded tackle with studs showing and was given a straight red card. The Cranes went straight on the attack and were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, which was driven goalwards but took a deflection to take it over the bar. Desperate Borough defending saw a wave of home attacks thwarted as the Cranes forced a series of corners and on 71 minutes Robbins produced a quality reaction save to parry an angled drive from another flag kick. With five minutes to go, a foul on Jamie Holland sparked a melee in the centre circle and when calm had been restored both Holland and a Cranborne player were cautioned, the latter seeing red for his second booking. And with player numbers equal again, the Cranes lost their edge and Borough held out to retain third place in the table. |
