Premier League Borough and Gillingham fought out a pulsating draw in an end to end game that saw the lead change four times before Jamie Holland came off the bench to secure a deserved point for the Hornets with two minutes to go. Borough created the first chance on 8 minutes when Lee Thomas broke wide before pulling the ball back across the goal and a home defender sliced his clearance over the bar, while four minutes later Gillingham saw a shot from a corner cleared off the line by Matt Morris. The Hornets took the lead on 14 minutes when a diagonal forward pass cut through the home defence, picking out Thomas who ran clear through on goal before slotting past the home keeper. However within a minute the home side was level when a cross from the left picked out Darren Isaac to convert. A minute later and Borough came close to restoring their lead when Kenny Strong shot narrowly over after being sent through by Steve Russell. Gillingham though went ahead on 20 minutes when a centre from the right fell to Dan Cox, who planted a firm header past Wayne Robbins. But again the scores were level within a minute when a well worked free kick saw Andy Barham tee up Russell whose blistering shot from outside the area flew into the top corner. Further Borough chances before the break saw Kieran Campbell battle well in the middle before sliding a pass to Thomas in space, who shot narrowly wide and Russell had a drive from outside the area deflected over the bar. Half Time 2-2 The game continued in the same vein after the break, as within a minute of the restart Strong latched onto a clearance from a Borough corner but shot narrowly over while Gillingham went straight down the other end and Robbins made a fine save to palm a close range effort past the post. Playing up the hill, the Gills began to push Borough back, and carved out a number of chances, but poor finishing saw the final efforts go wide. But after a difficult 10 minutes, Borough began to respond again and on 67 minutes Thomas latched onto a through ball wide on the left and centred to Barham in space, but the Borough midfielder stabbed his shot the wrong side of the post. With Borough now taking the initiative Paul Harding sent in a low free kick from the left hand corner of the area on 75 minutes and with no one able to connect, the home keeper did well to scramble across goal and divert the ball wide. And three minutes later the Hornets were back in front when Thomas collected a pass just outside the area and unleashed a stunning drive past the keeper. Again Borough were unable to hold the lead for more than a minute, with the Hornets marking to blame when a free kick from the right was headed home by Isaac at the far post. Worse was to come for Borough four minutes from time when the Gills looked to have snatched victory when Loic Heouard drove in a free kick from wide on the left which beat Robbins just inside his far post. However Borough had the last word on 88 minutes when the home keeper could only parry a shot from Strong and Holland was first to react to tuck the loose ball home and spark wild celebrations from the Hornets contingent. |
