Dorset Premier League
Saturday 5th January 2008

After the upheaval of the past seven days, Borough produced probably their best performance for a number of weeks and deserved a share of the points, but clinical finishing from the Gills's Nick Thompson was the difference between the sides as the visitors picked up their first win at Turlin Moor for five seasons.

In a first half saw plenty of good football from both sides but resulted in few clear cut chances. However the Gills could have taken the lead on five minutes when a free kick from wide on the left was met by Delahaye at the far post, but his downward header came back off the base of the post.

Borough's first clear chance came on 19 minutes when Lee Diaper found space down the left and looked to square the ball to an unmarked Jamie Holland in front of goal, but the low cross was cut out by a defender.

However within a minute a quick Gillingham counter attack resulted on a powerful drive from the left which Wayne Robbins did well to palm away, before collecting the ball at the second attempt.

Borough also nearly capatailsed with a counter attack on 27 minutes but a visiting defender got just in front of Kieran Mulvey as he looked to slot home a low cross by the right hand post.

The Hornets best chance of the half came on 39 minutes when John Bates beat the offside trap and ran clean through before seeing his shot blocked by Alan Clements in the Gillingham goal and although Holland was first to the rebound and made space for a shot, Clements recovered quickly to keep the ball out.

Half Time 0-0

The game opened up more after the break with Borough having the best of the early exchanges. Within two minutes of the restart Lee Cobb saw a right wing cross come back off the bar and Clements blocked the follow up shot on the rebound from Holland before Kieran Mulvey fired the final chance just over. Three minutes later Diaper's long range effort forced another fine block from Clements and although Hollond got to the loose ball his final shot was off target.

Gillingham came close on 50 minutes with a far post header from a corner, which went narrowly wide, but still Borough were still in the ascendency and a Gary Fooks long range effort was pushed past the post by Clements while from the resulting corner the Hornets had a penalty appeal waved away, when a shot from Mulvey appeared to strike a defenders hand.

However the Gills were still dangerous on the break and on 66 minutes Rimmell Williams did well to execute a last ditch tackle to deny a close range shot, but within a minute Gillingham were in front when a low cross from the right was driven home by Nick Thompson.

Borough pushed forward looking for a way back and Williams saw a long range effort hacked off the line by Clements, while the Gills keeper was also equal to a dipping free kick by Fooks from the edge of the area. On 85 minutes a Williams centre from the left picked out Holland whose first time shot was blocked, before the ball was worked out wide to Steve Russell, but his low drive flashed just past the far post.

With the Hornets committing numbers forward, they were always going to be vulnerable to a quick counter attack, and after surviving an earlier scare, they were undone on 86 minutes when another Borough attack broke down and a long forward pass allowed Nick Thompson a clear run on goal and he lifted his shot over the advancing Robbins, before following through to ensure the ball crossed the line.

The Hornets through didn't let their heads go down and they forced a series of corners, while the closest they came to pulling a goal back was when Williams latched on to a Holland cross from the right but again Clements managed to keep the resulting angled drive out with his legs.
