Dorset Premier League
Tuesday 28th August 2007

Borough made it four wins out of four as they put on their best display of the season so far to outplay local rivals Hamworthy United and also collect their first clean sheet of the campaign. With Jamie Holland rested to the bench after picking up an injury, Andy Barham slotted back into the Borough midfield while Shane Duggan and Dan Young also returned to the starting line-up.

Hamworthy got the ball into the net after only three minutes, but the goal was ruled out for offside. However it was the Hornets who took the lead on 6 minutes when a right wing cross from Scott Bedward was handled in the area and Ross Mills stepped up to convert the resulting spot kick.

Borough continued to push forward and on 11 minutes Steve Russell fed Lee Thomas in the area, but his shot on the turn was off target. Thomas though made no mistake on 14 minutes when he outpaced the visiting defence to latch on to a perfectly weighted pass down the middle from Barham and knocked the ball past the Hamworthy keeper before following through to ensure it crossed the line.

The Hammers came close to pulling a goal back on 20 minutes when a forward arrived unmarked at the far post to head a right wing cross the wrong side of the upright and five minutes later Darren Rudd was well placed to head an in swinging corner off the line.

However the majority of play was still in the Hamworthy half and on 27 minutes Thomas latched onto a Mills headed flick on, but his shot from just inside the area was palmed away by the visiting keeper. Thomas was again in action on 35 minutes as he chased a long ball forward down the right channel, before retrieving it near the by-line and sending in a low cross which was cleared off the line.

Two minutes before the break Thomas again found space down the right and pulled the ball back to John Bates, who shot narrowly wide, while on the stroke of half time Bedward made a strong run down the middle but his shot from 20 yards out went just the wrong side of the upright.

Half Time 2-0

Borough continued to dominate after the break and increased their lead within four minutes of the restart when Bedward was upended in the area and Mills sent the keeper the wrong way to claim his second penalty of the game.

The Hamworthy defence were struggling to cope with the pace of Thomas and on 53 minutes the Borough striker broke clear, but as the keeper came out to narrow the angle he shot wide. Borough though increased their lead further five minutes later as a well timed run from Russell down the left again opened up holes in the Hamworthy defence and with the keeper drawn to the ball he unselfishly squared to Mills to slam home into an empty net for his first Borough hat-trick.

Hamworthy did force an opening on 60 minutes, but Scott Mordew did well to steal the ball off of a visiting forward as he looked to have a clear run on goal, but within a minute Borough had notched up their fifth and final goal when Thomas again left the Hammers defence flat footed to latch onto a quickly taken free kick, before sliding his shot past the advancing keeper.

A further chance for Borough on 67 minutes when Bedward sent a high ball into the area from the right but a defender did well to clear in front of goal under pressure from Russell. As the game came to a close Hamworthy pushed forward looking for a consolation goal, but Doug Shear earned his clean sheet with a fine save 10 minutes from time as he tipped a dangerous curling cross from the left onto his bar, before it bounced to safety.
