Premier League Borough's final game of the season saw them fall to their heaviest defeat of the campaign as their in-form neighbours chalked up their ninth straight victory, however the scoreline failed to reflect the share of possession, which for the most part was equal, but the Hornets were undone by individual errors and some clinical finishing with Cris Rigler leading the way, scoring four second half goals. After a tight opening phase, Borough created the first chance on 12 minutes when Steve Moore sent Adam Kamorowski through on the right, but his final shot was blocked by the advancing Kevin Leonard and from the resulting corner a goal mouth scramble saw the ball fall to Ross Edwards five yards out but he hooked his effort narrowly wide of the upright On 18 minutes Ken Strong came close for Borough with a powerful header from a right wing corner which just cleared the bar while two minutes later at the other end Cris Rigler was off target with a header from a free kick. And it was Rec who took the lead on the half hour when Mike Notley picked up a loose ball 25 yards out and hammered home an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner. Having taken the initiative Rec looked to push home their advantage and Dan Young did well to get across to execute a last ditch tackle as a home forward appeared to have broken through, while Rigler came close with a dipping shot which hit the roof of the net. Borough came close to drawing level on 35 minutes after good work from Mariusz Iglewski who got in a cross from the left despite the attentions of three defenders which Paul Honeybun met with a firm header at the far post, but Leonard got across athletically to palm the ball away. Five minutes before the break, Borough were denied again after Keith Whatling got his head to a Honeybun free kick but the ball was deflected wide off of a defender. Half Time 0-0 Any hope of Borough getting back on level terms were dealt a blow on 51 weeks when a defensive mix up allowed Rigler to steal the ball from Doug Shear and roll it into an empty net. And four minutes later Rec went further ahead after Rigler was bundled over in the area and he stepped up himself to drive the spot kick home. Borough continued to push forward looking for a way back and Iglewski hit an angled drive on the turn which was smothered by Leonard. On 59 minutes Leonard denied Borough again when he blocked a stinging free kick from Iglewski, but the home side were quick to launch the ball forward on the counter attack sending Rigler through on goal and although Shear was out quickly to challenge, the rebound fell kindly to the home striker who steered the ball home. A further chance fell to Borough on 61 minutes when Honeybun unleashed a blistering shot from the edge of the area which Leonard got his body to and diverted it into his crossbar. On 68 minutes substitute Kieran Campbell shot narrowly wide from an Adam Watson corner as the Hornets continued to look for a consolation goal but they were undone again three minutes later when Notley ran on to a long clearance down the left and got to the by-line before squaring to Rigler who sidefooted home at the far post. |
