Premier League Borough boss Paul Harding rung the changes with a total five players making their debuts for the Hornets in the starting line-up and they served the home fans with a battling display to come from behind and earn a draw against their near neighbours. The debutantes were Dale Burton in goal, Lee Saunders at left back, Ross Edwards and Rodrigo Pons in midfield and Mariuz Iglewski up front, while Dan Young returned to the side after being sidelined for two months due to injury. Borough nearly made the perfect start inside the first minute when Ross Edwards arrived unmarked in the area to get his head to a cross from the left, but the ball went narrowly wide. However it was Recreation who took the lead after 12 minutes in their first clear attack when the ball was centered to Cris Rigler who steered in a shot from close range which Dale Burton got a hand to but couldn't keep out. Mariuz Iglewski came close to putting Borough level on 17 minutes as his neat turn left the visiting defence flat footed but his final shot fizzed just past the post. However on 24 minutes a ball down the right channel saw Recreation breach the Borough offside trap, but Dan Young recovered quickly and made a telling interception to cut out the resulting cross. Further Hamworthy pressure on 33 minutes saw Mike Notley break clear down the right before cutting inside, but Burton stood his ground well to block the resulting shot with his legs. Within a minute though Borough carved out a chance at the other end for Rodrigo Pons whose shot from the edge of the area was tipped onto the bar by visiting keeper Kevin Leonard. Half time 0-1 Borough came out after the break and put their opponents on the back foot for much of the second half. Pons caused the visitors a lot of problems and on 61 minutes he latched onto a right wing cross from John Bates and saw his first time shot cannon off the post with Leonard well beaten. Three minutes later Iglewski battled his way between two defenders before seeing his final shot denied by a well timed block from Leonard. Sensing the opportunity to get something from the game, Harding brought on Adam Watson and Callum Mcleod with 20 minutes remaining as Borough stepped up the tempo and on 76 minutes Bates sent Kieran Campbell down the right and his shot across the face of the goal just cleared the far post. However with the Hornets pushing forward in numbers they were vulnerable at the back, and on the immediate counter attack Notley broke down the right and crossed for Rigler to slot home, but the visiting striker was adjudged offside when the ball was fed through to him. Further Hamworthy pressure on 79 minutes saw Kenny Strong clear a shot from a corner off the line and Rigler put a header from a left wing cross wide. But within two minutes Leonard was tested again at the other end when Mcleod laid the ball back to Andy Barham whose low shot from 20 yards out was pushed past the post by the veteran gloveman. Two minutes later Campbell got his head to a corner but saw it headed off the line, but the resulting clearance set up a Hamworthy attack which resulted in Rigler getting clear of the Borough defence, but Burton timed his interception perfectly to get down and smother the ball. However with five minutes remaining, Borough levelled the score when a Watson left wing corner was headed on by Mcleod and Pons was on hand at the far post to drive the ball home at the second attempt and give Borough a deserved share of the points. |
