Senior Cup - 1st Round Borough were dumped out of the Senior Cup at the first round stage after being left with a mountain to climb following a three goal salvo in 15 first half minutes from their near neighbours and despite a much improved performance after the interval, they were unable to make the early breakthrough required to bring them back into the game, allowing Rec. to cruse to victory. Gary Fooks was drafted in to the Borough defence after returning to the club following an 18 month absence, while Jamie Holland, just back from suspension, started on the bench. Fooks found himself in the middle of the action within the first minute, getting across quickly to clear for a corner after Rec forward had cut into the area from the left and Wayne Robbins was also in action early on, coming out quickly to bundle the ball clear, with Cris Rigler bearing down. On 13 minutes Fooks made another critical interception to deny Dan Manual a goal scoring opportunity. Borough's first chance came on 15 minutes with a long range free kick from Steve Russell, but Kevin Leonard in the visitors goal was equal to the shot. The Hornets carved out a further chance six minutes when Ross Mills fed Russell down the left, but his low shot was easily collected buy the veteran gloveman. It was Hamworthy though who took the lead on 25 minutes when a quick ball forward picked out Manual in space on the left and he cut inside before placing a shot past Robbins and just inside the far post. Manual nearly doubled the score a minute later when he again broke clear of his marker, but this time he shot wide with the goal at his mercy. Mills came within inches of putting Borough level on 28 minutes with a header which went narrowly wide, but Rec increased their lead on 34 minutes when the broke quickly down the right and the ball was centered to an unmarked Cris Rigler, who had time to lift his shot over the advancing Robbins. Worse was to come for Borough five minutes before the break, when a deep right wing corner was sent back across the goalmouth and although Robbins got his hand to the ball it fell to Simon Brett at the right hand post, who headed home. Lee Thomas had a chance to pull a goal back for Borough just before the interval when he got his head to a Mills cross but the ball dropped wide of the upright. Half Time 0-3 Holland replaced the injured Russell at the start of the second half, but within a minute of the restart, Borough survived another Rec attack as Manual got down the right and centered to Rigler, but Robbins was out quickly to smother the shot. Borough though began to push the visitors back and on 53 minutes Kenny Strong headed a Scott Bedward free kick towards goal and Andy Barham just failed to get a clean connection from 6 yards out and the ball was scrambled clear. On 56 minutes Scott Mordew picked up a cross field pass on the left and unleashed a blistering shot from 25 yards out which flew just wide. Two minutes later Mills threaded a pass into the path of Holland, but his final shot was blocked. Borough sacrificed Mordew at the back to bring on Kieran Mulvey to bolster the attack as the Hornets continued to push the visitors back and Mills saw a lifting drive from the edge of the area just clear the bar while Holland got in a shot from a tight angle but the ball was diverted wide by Leonard. Hamworthy however showed they were still dangerous on the break and on 69 minutes a Hamworthy attack resulted in a shot which just cleared the bar. Two minutes later Kenny Strong went on a run into the area beating three players on the way, but he was unable to get enough power on the final shot to trouble Leonard. Another chance for Borough on 73 minutes saw a high ball into the area by Paul Leaton which picked out Thomas, but he was unable to get his final shot on target. With Borough pushing forward in numbers, they were always likely to be vulnerable to the speed of Rec's counter attacks and on 78 the ball was pushed forward quickly to Mike Notley whose low shot beat Robbins. Borough though were finally rewarded for their pressure on 82 minutes when a Mills drive from outside the area came off the post and Holland was on hand to steer home the rebound. Rec though had the last say on the game as deep in injury time they cleared to Rigler unmarked and just inside the Borough half, who ran through and took the ball past Robbins before slotting into an empty net. |
