Dorset Premier League
Saturday 1st December 2007

Borough gave the league leaders a stern test and a Dan Young equaliser eight minutes from time saw them earn a well deserved draw to maintain their unbeaten league record at Turlin Moor.

The Hornets had an early scare as they survived a goal mouth scramble within the first minute but subsequently settled well and came close after 10 minutes when Kieran Campbell laid the ball back to Gary Fooks outside the area, whose shot found a gap but went narrowly wide.

On 13 minutes Steve Russell broke down the left and crossed to the near post where Lee Thomas attempted to steer the ball home, but Paul Gadsby in the visitor’s goal was on hand to save.

However within a minute, Borough took the lead as Campbell collected a forward pass on the left and did well to shake off a defender before centring to Thomas who headed home from five yards out.

The Blues nearly equalised on through an own goal on 16 minutes when Ken Strong got his head to a long range shot and saw the ball loop just wide of the upright. Two minutes later Gary Fooks sent a teasing cross into the Portland area and both Strong and Russell just failed to connect by the left hand post.

Both sides continued to push forward and on 31 minutes a Fooks in-swinging corner from the right was headed off the line by a Portland defender. However the Blues equalised on 36 minutes following a harsh penalty decision when Young headed the ball downwards onto his hand and although Wayne Robins got a touch to the spot kick from Michael Walker, he couldn’t keep it out.

Just before the interval Portland came close to taking the lead after a break down the left, but Rimmell Williams got back quickly to clear the resulting shot off the line.

Half Time 1-1

The game continued end to end after the break and on 56 minutes a Paul Harding free kick into the box was cleared only as far as Thomas at the edge of the area, and his blistering shot just cleared the bar. Portland though immediately broke clear down the other end and with Robbins out quickly to narrow the angle Borough were relieved to see the final shot go wide of the upright.

As the half progressed, Portland began to push the Hornets back and Strong did well to clear a shot off the line, while a header from the resulting corner was deflected wide.

It was Portland’s ability to launch a swift counter attack which saw them take the lead on 71 minutes as Walker got clear of the Borough defence down the left before crossing to Matt White who steered the ball past Robbins from five yards out.

Borough responded well and on 74 minutes Harding attempted a shot from 30 yards out which had Gadsby beaten, but went just the wrong side of the post. That chance spurred the Hornets on and they deservedly drew level eight minutes from time when Harding sent in a free kick from wide on the left, which was flicked on by a Borough head before falling to Young at the far post, to bundle the ball home.

Borough had to weather some sustained Portland pressure as they looked to restore the lead before the final whistle, but the Hornets nearly had the last word as a perfectly placed cross field pass from Harding picked out Young on the right and his first time shot was narrowly off target.
