Premier League Borough hosted the second leg of the Dorset Groundhop with a lunchtime kick-off in front of close to 200 spectators, but with the Hornets struggling to get into a rhythm in the first half they found themselves one goal down at the break and despite drawing level in a much improved second half performance they were unable to secure a winner against a well drilled Cherries defence. Borough were forced to make a change before kick-off as Dan Young turned his ankle in the warm up, and Scott Mordew was brought into the starting XI, while Dan Plumb from Borough's U18's took his place on the bench. It was the visitors who started the stronger and on 6 minutes saw a shot from outside the area headed over the bar by a Borough defender and from the resulting corner an angled shot from the left struck the outside of the post. Borough's first clear chance fell to Steve Russell whose long range shot from the left was collected low down by his left hand post by Garfield Charles in the Sturminster goal. Borough though suffered further injury problems ten minutes later when Rimmel Williams was injured in a challenge and replaced by Matt Morris. As the half progressed neither side were able to fashion out any clear chances until on 40 minutes a strong run by Lee Thomas saw him outpace the last Cherries defender but Charles was out quickly to parry the resulting shot and was up quickly to deny Scott Bedward with his legs as he looked to slot the rebound home from a tight angle. However in first half stoppage time Sturminster broke the deadlock with a superb solo effort from Robert Froud who intercepted a misplaced Borough pass deep inside his own half and rode a series of tackles to carry the ball over 50 yards to the edge of the Borough penalty area before unleashing a fierce drive which Wayne Robbins got a hand to, but couldn't keep out. HT 0-1 Borough's half time team talk made a marked difference to the home side and they visibly stepped up a gear from the restart. However they had to make their third defensive change almost immediately after kick off as Darren Rudd, injured in the build up to the Sturminster goal, limped off to be replaced by Paul Leaton. With Borough back to the fluid passing game the home fans have come to expect this season the pressure paid off on 54 minutes with Bedward carving out space in the area before unleashing a shot which was blocked by a defender but Ross Mills collected the rebound on the edge of the area and placed his drive just inside the right hand post for his tenth goal of the season. Two minutes later however, Robbins was called into action to punch away a Sturminster Free kick and the Cherries carved out a further chance when they broke clear down the left but the final shot went wide. Borough though began to take control of the game and on 65 minutes Mills got his head to a Russell free kick but the ball went just the wrong side of the upright, while two minutes later, Andy Barham sent a free kick from wide on the left across the Sturminster goal mouth, but the ball alluded the Borough players in the area, and was cleared at the far post. Further Borough pressure with 15 minutes to go saw a series of corners and Charles did well to scramble the ball away after Kenny Strong got a shot in from close range, while Mills also saw two headers go narrowly off target. However the Cherries were still a danger on the counter attack and after latching onto a wayward Borough defensive pass, they broke down the right and a cross was whipped into a visiting forward who headed over from 5 yards out. Inside the last five minutes Thomas nearly secured all three points for the Hornets with a precision shot on the turn, but Charles denied the Borough striker with a fingertip save at full stretch to divert the ball over and Borough had to be content with a daw which extends their unbeaten run to seven games since the start of the season. |
