Dorset Premier League
Saturday 22nd December 2007

Borough fell to their second successive defeat at Churchill Close as they were outfought by the home side who played for nearly an hour with 10 men after having a player was sent off for abusing the referee, with the Hornets undone in the first five minutes of the second half, as they shipped three soft goals, giving them an impossible job to get back into the game.

Borough started the stronger but were unable to convert their possession into clear chances when they got the ball into the final third of the pitch. Stur on the other hand were content to soak up the pressure, testing Borough on the break and had already forced last ditch tackles from Lee Cobb and Matt Morris before on 16 minutes Ross Humphery got clear of the Hornets back line and although his first shot came back off the post, he was on hand to tuck home the rebound.

Gary Fooks came close to equalising two minutes later when he found space down the right, before cutting inside but his low shot was collected by Stur keeper Paul Maitland at the second attempt. Almost immediately Maitland was in action again, getting down quickly to deny Lee Diaper.

Borough's best chance of the half came on 30 minutes when Fooks latched onto a square ball 25 yards out and unleashed a powerful drive which had Maitland beaten but cannoned off the post.

With the home side reduced to 10 men on 35 minutes, Borough continued to have the best of the play and just before the break Lee Thomas headed a Diaper cross narrowly over from 5 yards out.

Half Time 1-0

Borough though found themselves two goals down within a minute of the restart when the home side broke clear through the middle and although Wayne Robbins was out quickly to parry the initial shot, Mark Henson was first to the rebound to steer the ball goalwards, with Matt Morris tracking back, unable to keep the ball out.

Worse was to come three minutes later when Robbins came out to intercept a through ball, but his clearance cannoned off of John Elliott and dropped over the Borough keeper and into the net. And before the Hornets had time to settle, their nightmare five minutes was completed when Humphery was on hand to steer home a left wing cross from close range.

Borough had no option but to push forward looking for a way back, and on 55 minutes Diaper forced a fine save from Maitland as the Stur keeper steered a low shot past the post. Further Borough pressure resulted in a number of half chances, but the Hornets were again frustrated by the woodwork on 69 minutes when Diaper's left wing cross picked out Thomas in front of goal, but his downward header struck the base of the post.

The Hornets finally pulled a goal back 15 minutes from time after a good interchange down the right resulted in a low cross into the area which was met by defender Henson, who sliced his clearance into his own net.

Three minutes later Jamie Holland was sent into space down the left, but his final shot cleared the bar, while Tim Porter came off the bench and almost immediately saw a low drive from a corner go narrowly wide. However Sturminster held out well at the back, to ensure Borough were not going to find a way back, and when Diaper did get the ball in the net a minute from the end of normal time, it was ruled out for offside, ending a miserable day for the Hornets.
