Dorset Premier League Cup
Saturday 29th December 2007

For the second week running against Sturminster Marshall, Borough were unable to convert their superior share of possession into goals, which left them open to a later strike from the visitors through Dave Clements, but Chris Squire equalised for the Hornets a minute from time to give both sides their first League Cup points of this campaign.

Borough carved out and early chance after four minutes with a through ball into the path of Jamie Holland, but Paul Maitland in the home goal was out quickly to collect. Four minutes later Lee Diaper saw an angled ball in the area deflected past the post by a defender and Holland looked to pounce.

Further Borough pressure saw Maitland collect a Bates header after a deep cross to the right hand post by Gary Fooks, while on 18 minutes a Dan Young through ball sent Rimmell Williams down the left and after cutting inside, his square ball across the area alluded Kieran Campbell when a shot on goal may have been a better option.

It took until the 28th minute for Sturminster to carve out their first chance, when Ross Humphery broke clear of the Borough defence, but the home side were fortunate to see his first time long range shot clear the bar.

Borough continued to dominate but were unable to carve out another clear chance until four minutes from the interval when Diaper showed good close range skill in the area as he fought his way to the by-line before pulling the ball back to Rimmell Williams in front of goal, but the final shot was blazed over.

Half Time 0-0

Borough continued in the same vein after the break as two minutes after the restart Matt Morris threaded a low ball through the visiting defence to pick out Holland whose angled drive went just the wrong side of the post, while four minutes later Diaper fed Campbell down the left and his deep cross picked out Holland at the far post but he was unable to get his shot on target.

Sturminster began to show more promise, causing the home defence problems on the break, and had the ball in the back of the net from a corner on 53 minutes, but the referee disallowed it for a push in the area.

It was still Borough who were creating the majority of chances however and on 69 minutes Diaper was unfortunate to see a low free kick from the left hand edge of the area take a deflection from a defender to divert it wide, while three minutes later and from a similar position Fooks blasted in a free kick which Maitland did well to block.

Further Borough pressure saw a Morris through ball pick out Squire in space, but he shot straight at the keeper, while Shane Stanley got in a near post header from a Holland right wing cross, but the ball went over.

However Sturminster showed they were still dangerous on the break when on 84 minutes a quick forward pass picked out Scott Thomas who ran through on goal, but his final shot was wide of the target. And they broke the deadlock three minutes from time when another Borough attack broke down resulting in a long ball forward which allowed Dave Clements to run through unopposed on goal before slotting past the advancing Elliott Broome.

Borough though deservedly equalised a minute from time when Diaper beat two defenders as he made a strong run into the area before seeing his final shot blocked by Maitland, but Squire was first to the rebound to hammer the ball home. And the Hornets could have won the game seconds from the end when Diaper slipped the ball to Squire, whose first time shot just cleared the bar.
