Premier League A first half brace from Ross Mills set the platform for a solid Borough victory at Days Park, but having been on the wrong end of a 6-0 opening day defeat at the hands of Hamworthy Recreation, the Swans raised their game to play their part in an entertaining encounter as the final scoreline somewhat flattered Borough given the result was in the balance up to the final 15 minutes. The Swans has the best of the initial exchanges, but Wayne Robbins was equal to two long range shots while two more chances for the home side were off target. On 14 minutes a Swanage striker got on the end of a right wing corner, but with the goal at his mercy, his header went wide, but moments later a home defender was forced to clear a low left wing cross from Steve Russell over his own bar and from the resulting corner Mills saw his header cleared off the line. However Borough kept up the pressure and opened the scoring on 16 minutes when Russell whipped in a cross from the right behind the home back line and Mills arrived at the far post to head home. Straight from the restart though Swanage almost drew level as Dan Young did well to get back and clear off the line after a home striker broke clear and shot past the advancing Robbins. Swanage continued to pressure down the channels and Young was again called on to clear under pressure after Anthony Warrington found space down the left to send in a teasing cross. Chances continued to be carved out at both ends and on 33 minutes Scott Bedward opened up the Swanage defence with a 40 yard run but his final shot was blocked from a corner, while at the other end a Swanage forward beat the Borough offside trap and his low shot beat Robbins but drifted just wide of the right hand post. It was Borough though who found the net again three minutes before the break as Russell found space wide on the right and crossed to an unmarked Mills to head past the home keeper Nick Taylor from 5 yards out. Mills came close to his hat-trick just before the break as Jamie Holland sent him clear and he knocked the ball past the advancing Taylor but his touch was just too strong and he was unable to get to the ball before it rolled to safety. Half Time 0-2 Swanage took the initiative after the restart and an early ball forward saw a home forward brake clear, but he shot wide with only Robbins to beat. But the Swans deservedly pulled a goal back on 54 minutes when a right wing corner was headed in by Aaron Corby at the far post. A minute later Borough came close as Matt Morris sent over a free kick from the right was flicked on by Lee Thomas at the near post, but the ball dropped just wide of the far upright while a later chance fell to Dan Young who shot over from outside the area. However Borough made the game safe on 77 minutes when Bedward sent across a perfectly weighted diagonal pass into the area which picked out Holland clear on the right to blast home. Deep in injury time, Borough scored their fourth goal with a move started by Darren Rudd with a strong run out of defence before the ball was worked wide on the right to Bedward and then quickly inside to Mills whose shot beat the advancing keeper and Thomas was on hand to ensure the ball crossed the line. |
