Premier League Borough fell to their first league defeat of the season against newcomers Wincanton, who had also secured victory against the Hornets in the League Cup three weeks previously. Despite Borough starting the game positively, the first clear chance fell to Wincanton on 9 minutes, when Wayne Robbins was forced to tip a long range effort past the post. Two minutes later Wincanton were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area which cannoned off the wall for a corner, and when the resulting flag kick was headed back across goal, the referee appeared to spot a Borough handball and awarded the home side a penalty, which Sam Vine duly converted. Borough responded on 18 minutes when a corner fell to Scott Bedward who took the ball round a defender before putting in a shot which the home keeper got down well to save. A minute later the Wincanton glove man was penalised for handling the ball outside the area and the free kick was cut back to Gary Fooks who shot just over. A further chance for the Hornets came on 22 minutes when they broke down the right and a cross into the middle by Andy Barham was cleared over the bar by a home defender. However despite these chances, Borough found themselves further behind on 25 minutes when they were caught on the break and the resulting centre allowed a Wincanton forward an easy side foot home. Borough came close to pulling a goal back on 32 minutes when the home defence were forced to scramble the ball clear for a corner under pressure from Ross Mills, but within a minute the Hornets were back in the game when Mills was on hand to convert a Fooks cross. Wincanton though responded almost immediately as a cross field pass picked out a home forward, who dragged his shot wide, while on 42 minutes Robbins was forced to make another fin save to deny a home forward after he broke clear down the left. But within a minute of the break, Wincanton restored their two goal advantage, as a poor pass from Rimmell Williams was cut out by a home forward who ran clean through to score. Half Time 3-1 Borough opened the half by forcing a corner from a Bedward cross but the resulting flag kick came to nothing. However Wincanton also had an early chance which Robbins did well to save. On 59 minutes a drive from Dan Young was denied by the home keeper, after good work from John Bates, but at the other end Wincanton had the ball in the net two minutes later, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside decision. With 20 minutes to go, the Borough back line were put under pressure as Wincanton forced a series of corners and in the process Williams was forced to cleared a shot off the line. However the Borough defence was again breached on 73 minutes as another error saw the Hornets dispossessed in midfield allowing a home striker a clear run through on goal to score. Kiran Mulvey came close to pulling a goal back on 79 minutes from a free kick which was tipped over the bar, and five minutes from time Bedward broke into space and saw his shot blocked but the rebound fell to Mills who blasted over. However there was still time for Wincanton to see a chance of their own fired over the bar, to finish the game on top, and Borough could have no excuses after being out fought for the second time at Moor Lane.
Town manager Wayne Jerome paid tribute to his players' work-rate after an emphatic third win of the season. Steve Devlin and Sam Vine scored two each, the former including a penalty in his haul. "A result like this has been coming," said Jerome. "My players have been unbelievable. Their work-rate is second to none and they are getting what they deserve. We have a very small squad but what we lack in quantity we have in quality." Borough manager Jason Phillips, who saw Ross Mills notch his side's consolation, admitted the defeat was partly his fault "I think I brought back a few players from injury too early so I hold up my hands," he said. "But it was a funny day. Wincanton got a penalty for which they did not appeal, then their keeper handled outside the box and was not even booked. "The referee said he would check the rules at the next referees' meeting but Wincanton are a good, hard side and will take a lot of points at home." |
