Premier League Cup - Group A Borough fell to their first defeat of the season in their initial Group A League Cup match at Moor Lane as they struggled to break down a determined Wincanton side who chalked up only their second victory since joining the Dorset Premier League. After loosing three defenders during last weekends game, Borough were forced to make wholesale changes at the back, with Scott Mordew and Matt Morris drafted into the starting line-up while Paul Leaton made his full first team debut at left back. The home side looked determined to make a mark from the kick-off and after only two minutes want close with a stooping header from a free kick whipped in from the left. Further pressure from Wincanton saw Wayne Robbins react quickly to smother a loose ball from a corner and Mordew got up well to head away a right wing cross with a home striker bearing down. Borough's first chance came on 15 minutes when Leaton got on the end of a corner, but the home keeper was down quickly to smother the shot. However Wincanton continued to have the majority of the possession and after saving one long range drive at full stretch, Robbins was beaten on 17 minutes by a curling shot from just outside the area by Jon Vance. Andy Barham came close to putting Borough level on 23 minutes with a free kick from 25 yards out, but the home keeper got across well to palm the ball away, but at the other end Robbins continued to be tested and on 33 minutes did well to tip a dipping long range effort over the bar. In the last 10 minutes of the half, Borough began to look more fluid going forward and the home keeper twice denied Lee Thomas, firstly getting out quickly to block a low shot and then diverting a stinging drive from the Borough striker at full stretch. Half Time 1-0 Borough continued to push forward after the break, but a well drilled home defence continued to frustrate the Hornets but with Wincanton quick on the counter attack, Robbins the busier of the glovemen, and on 55 minutes made a superb reaction save to divert a downward header over the bar. On 63 minutes, Leaton's header from a corner went narrowly over, but within a minute a quick counter attack saw a home striker break through, and Borough were fortunate to see the final shot go wide. Ross Mills came close on 67 minutes when he got his head to a Barham free kick but the ball dropped just the wrong side of the post. Borough brought Aaron Woldon and Phil Midson on to provide fresh legs and they combined well down the right on 85 minutes and Woldon's resulting low shot forced a good save from the home keeper near his post. The Hornets carved out their best chance of the game in stoppage time when Bedward battled his way through into the area from the left despite the close attention of two defenders before centring to Mills, who got in a shot on the turn from 6 yards out, but between a defender stationed on the line and the goalkeeper the ball was scrambled clear. |
