Dorset Premier League
Saturday 12th April 2008

A goal in each half saw Borough secure an excellent win against their visitors from Somerset which also saw the Hornets pick up their first clean sheet since September, in a game where Doug Shear returned between the sticks and made a string of fine saves to keep Wincanton at bay.

The first half was a tight affair with the first clear chance coming to the visitors on eight minutes when a log shot was deflected past the post by a Borough defender and from the resulting corner a far post header drifted just wide.

However it was Borough who took the lead on 11 minutes when a right wing cross from Matt Morris picked out John Bates on the edge of the area and although his first time drive was blocked by a defender the ball fell to Kieran Campbell ten yards out whose shot on the turn beat visiting keeper Scott Vine inside his right hand post.

Both defences worked hard to blunt the opposition forward lines and chances we are a premium although as the half progressed Wincanton began to take the upper hand. However Borough should have doubled their lead on 35 minutes when Paul Honeybun was sent clear through, but Vine stood his ground well to force him wide and the final shot from a tight angle went wide.

Two minutes later, Shear was called into action as a Wincanton forward broke clear on the left and the Borough keeper was out quickly to smother the shot and keep his side in front at the break.

Half time 1-0

Borough came out strongly after the interval and Campbell did well to carve out some space wide on the left on 47 minutes but his final cross flashed across the goalmouth with no one available in a Borough shirt to deliver the final touch. However Wincanton nearly drew level three minutes later after a well worked move gave a forward space on the left to get a shot in, but Shear reacted quickly to block the chance.

On 54 minutes Borough doubled their lead when initially Mariusk Iglewski saw a blistering shot deflected wide for a corner, but when the resulting flag kick was cleared to Iglewski he made no mistake to convert with a low drive.

Wincanton made an immediate switch and pushed three players forward in an attempt to get back into the game and on 56 minutes Borough were fortunate to see a shot clear the bar after a striker was picked out by a left wing cross, while four minutes later Shear made a superb flying save to push a near post header from a right wing corner past the post

Wincanton put another chance wide after a low centre from the right picked out a forward at the far post, but at the other end the Hornets were denied a penalty on 68 minutes when Ross Edwards battled down the left before sending in a deep cross which found Honeybun in space and although his angled drive appeared to deflect wide off of a defenders hand the referee waved away claims for a spot kick.

Further Wincanton pressure saw the visitors denied again by Shear who tipped a free kick onto his crossbar before the ball was cleared to safety, while two minutes later another Wincanton free kick saw the ball rebound off the wall into the path of a visiting forward who blazed his shot narrowly wide of the right hand post.

However with gaps in the visitors defence, Borough could have again made the game safe on 83 minutes when Callum McLeod sent Iglewski through on goal but after taking the ball past Vine his shot lacked pace, allowing a defender time to get back to clear off the line and although Iglewski was first to the rebound Vine recovered quickly to block the second attempt.

With five minutes remaining, Wincanton still continued to push forward looking for a way back, but they were denied again by Shear who saved at point blank range to ensure the Borough defence was not breached for the first time in seven months.
