Premier League Cup - Group A Following a niggley first half, the the match was abandoned at the break after the referee decided he was not comfortable to allow the game to continue, following a fracas away from the pitch as the two sides entered the changing room together. Borough shuffled the side to give a number of reserve players a chance to stake a claim for a first team place, and started the brighter with Lee Diaper carving out space down the right on 5 minutes before pulling the ball back, but it ran behind the unmarked Chris Squire and was cleared to safety. A minute later Luke Crutcher got his head to a left wing corner, but it was straight at visiting keeper Rob Davis. Wincanton created their first chance on 14 minutes when Simon Bryant was sent clear down the left, but he shot wide with just Elliott Broome to beat. Four minutes later, Borough had another let off as Mike Williams got behind the home defence, but shot over. Borough also had their chances and Ken Strong made a solid forward run before picking up a return pass on the edge of the area, but his final shot lacked the power to trouble Davis. On 25 minutes Bryant tested Broome with a downward header from a free kick, but the Borough keeper was down smartly to collect, and a minute later Bryant found himself one on one against Broome, but he elected to square the ball and Strong was across quickly to clear. Borough though began to force their way back into the game and on 37 minutes Diaper threaded a ball through which Squire latched onto but under pressure from the visiting defence he shot wide. Two minutes later, Borough's best move of the half saw Kieran Mulvey tee up Diaper for a run into the area, but his final shot hit the side netting. With Wincanton having Bryant cautioned for abusing the referee and Sam Vine following him into the book for a very late challenge on Lee Cobb, the game began to boil over in the latter stages of the half, and after the altercation which followed the half time whistle the referee elected to stop the game rather than face the potential that problems would escalate after the break. |
