Premier League Borough lost their 100% league record but remain unbeaten after picking up a draw at Alvington Lane, but after coming back from two goals down, the Hornets had to survive a torrid last 10 minutes against the 10 men of Westlands before picking up a share of the points. With Wayne Robbins injured and Doug Shear unavailable, former reserve keeper Elliott Broome made his first team debut between the sticks, while with both Jamie Holland and Lee Thomas suspended, Rimmel Williams partnered Ross Mills up front. The home side came out stronger from kick off, on six minutes a low cross into the area got past Broome, but with no striker on hand the ball was cleared to safety. Five minutes later, Dan Young got back well to deny a home forward after a through ball seemed to have sent him clear. Westlands though took the lead on 16 minutes when a corner from the right was met by Andy Smith who arrived unmarked at the far post.. Westlands nearly doubled their lead four minutes later when Mike Rousell carved out space on the by-line but his cross was headed over, but they found themselves down to 10 men on 24 minutes when their right back was given a straight red card for verbally abusing the linesman. Within a minute Borough nearly equalised when a Shane Duggan shot from a right wing corner was cleared off the line, but Westlands went straight down the other end and Broome did well to stand his ground and block a shot after a home forward broke down the right. Borough began to settle and made in-roads into the home defence without creating a clear chance, but on 37 minutes, against the run of play, they found themselves two goals adrift when a loose ball was pumped forward down the left hand channel allowing Richard Proctor a clear run on goal, and he finished with a low shot past Broome. The Hornets were fortunate not to find themselves further behind on 42 minutes when Rousell again found space on the by-line before cutting the ball back to his strike partner, but the final shot was deflected wide off a Westlands player. A minute later Steve Russell carved out a chance for Borough with a diagonal run from the left before shooting just over from the edge of the area. Borough though pulled a vital goal back in first half stoppage time when Andy Barham latched on to a high ball forward from Russell on the edge of the area before beating the advancing Gary Noon in the home goal with a perfect lob. However Westlands nearly restored their two goal lead before the break as Andy Harris latched onto a poor back pass but Broome was out quickly to deflect the final shot wide. Half Time 2-1 Borough made the perfect start to the second half, drawing level within three minutes of the restart after Barham was upended on the area and although Noon got his hand to Mills's spot kick he was unable to keep the ball out. The game was now end to end and on 53 minutes a Westland shot hit the post after good work down the left while at the other end a Russell strike from wide on the rignt went just over, while Noon twice did well to deny Scott Bedward when the Borough midfielder carved out some space down the right. Despite the expectation that Westlands would tire in the final 15 minutes, it was Borough who found themselves on the back foot and on 79 minutes Broome did well to block a 20 yard drive while three minutes later the ball was slipped through to Rousell who shot wide with just the keeper to beat. Into the last five minutes and Borough were defending desperately but another through ball saw Rousell clear, but his dipping shot hit the top of the cross bar, while a minute later Dan Young executed a last ditch tackle to deny Rousell another opportunity. Injury time again found Rousell one-on-one against Broome but the Borough keeper pulled off a fine save, and with virtually the last kick of the match Rousell was picked out unmarked in the area by a left wing cross, but again the chance went narrowly wide leaving Borough hanging on for a point. |
